Lego Thriller!

This is great! From the CTube:
Michael Jackson's groundbreaking music video "Thriller" has all the ingredients for success: cat monsters, zombie break dancing, Jheri curls.

"Lego Thriller" takes all of what makes the pop singer's 1984 video a classic and builds a new piece of work with - you guessed it - Legos. Using stop-motion animation, the video matches Jackson's original frame-by-frame, minute-for-all-13-minutes.

The devil here is in the details. "Lego Thriller's" creators don't overlook any of the particulars from Jackson's epic zombiefest. With an eye only dedicated fans have, they emulate every pan, zoom and angle that give "Thriller" its epic cinematic quality. YouTube browsers can find variations of "Lego Thriller" that prove just how similar it is to its forebear by playing the two videos on a split screen.

The zombie dance scene that made "Thriller" so famous marks "Lego Thriller's" highlight. Despite being zombies - and Lego ones at that - "Lego Thriller's" undead prove to be just as graceful and arthritis-free as Jackson's ghouls. As the Lego zombies chop, sway and shamble through the dance number, one has to wonder how even the most talented animators can choreograph a troupe of figurines.

Now, when is "Lego Beat It" making its YouTube premiere?

Zombie Science! On the Evolution of Zombie Populations

From coalesced:
T-Rex thinks he's eliminated zombies with logic. The basic idea: Zombies depend on human brains to survive, but they also must bite humans (turning them into zombies) to create more zombies. If zombies were really good at catching humans and eating their brains, there would be no more humans and the zombie population would die off. Conversely, if the zombies had trouble getting to the human brains, they could convert humans into zombies (by biting them without eating their brains), but they would starve due to brain deprivation.

Humans vs Zombies Game Gets New Rules

From the Bowling Green News:
Last semester, two students were arrested for disorderly conduct because they were carrying what appeared to be weapons on campus.

They were participating in the game "humans versus zombies," in which students carried Nerf guns around to protect themselves from the "infectious zombies."

The game has now been allowed to be played once again on campus, but with a set of ground rules instated by the players and University Police. It started at 8 a.m. on Jan. 22 and will run until midnight on Jan. 29.

"Not much has changed overall, but things were just refined. We discussed boundaries, and residence halls became off limits," said Atonn Smeltzer, junior and a co-founder of the BG Undead organization, which was created by the students who play the game.

University police helped the organization founders set the ground rules.

Interview with "American Zombie" director, Grace Lee

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Rotten Tomatoes:
Tim Ryan writes: "Director Grace Lee's first film, "The Grace Lee Project," was an exploration of identity that asked the question, "What's in a name?" In her latest, "American Zombie," she looks at identity through a different lens: that of the living dead.

"American Zombie," making its world premiere at Slamdance, tells the intriguing story of two filmmakers who team up to document a community of "high-functioning" zombies in Los Angeles. It begins as a study of a population, but turns increasingly dark as the filmmakers' prejudices and fears are tested. "American Zombie" is by no means your typical horror show; it's got its share of morbid laughs and social commentary. Lee talked with Rotten Tomatoes about the appeal of zombies, making and the communal spirit of Slamdance.

We the Living Dead:The Convoluted Politics of Zombie Cinema

From Reason Magazine via Skullring.com:
The zombiephiles—that odd cohort of nerds, video game addicts, and mullet-headed grindhouse nostalgists who have made the flesh-eating zombie a central figure of modern culture—know all about chewed kidneys, shambling ghouls, moldering flesh, barricaded doors, deserted streets, and the all-important bullet to the brain. But most of all, fans of the rich, vibrant zombie narrative of the late 20th and early 21st centuries know about politics.

Ever since George Romero’s genre-creating Night of the Living Dead in 1968, and especially since Romero’s overtly political 1978 masterpiece Dawn of the Dead, highbrow revolutionary theorizing has stalked this graveyard of lowbrow pleasures. In his 1979 study The American Nightmare: Essays on the Horror Film, the esteemed cineaste Robin Wood declared that the zombie’s cannibalism “represents the ultimate in possessiveness, hence the logical end of human relations under capitalism.” J. Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum’s 1983 study Midnight Movies called Night of the Living Dead “a remarkable vision of the late sixties, offering the most literal possible depiction of America devouring itself.” In a later reappraisal, a Village Voice critic explained that “the zombie carnage seemed a grotesque echo of the conflict then raging in Vietnam.”

Kidman in a 50 mph Zombie Crash

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From the New York Daily News:
LOS ANGELES - Nicole Kidman escaped serious injury when a car she was riding in on a sci-fi film location shoot crashed during a scene in which her character was fleeing zombie-like creatures, the studio said yesterday.

The 39-year-old Oscar winner was rushed to a hospital "for evaluation" and released after the stunt crash Wednesday night during filming of "The Invasion," Warner Bros. Pictures said in a statement.

Neither Kidman's publicist nor the studio would comment on what, if any, injuries the actress received when the camera-rigged car struck a light pole and a trash can on W. Sixth St. in downtown L.A.

The film, about an epidemic with extraterrestrial origins, also stars new James Bond hunk Daniel Craig.

Today we've scored a first look at Grace Lee's American Zombie, which will have its World Premiere at this year's Slamdance Film Festival next week. The pic documents the daily lives of a small community of the living deceased who make their home in Los Angeles. Zombie Casting Call in Wisconsin!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From the Wisconsin State Journal:

Dissatisfied with the crop of presidential candidates that's shaping up for '08? Mount Horeb resident Brendan Hartmann wants you to ponder voting for a zombie.

Hartmann is making a film entitled, "Behind the Scenes: The Media and the Zombie Phenomenon," in which the zombies that have risen from graves decide that rather than eating people and causing mayhem, they want to assimilate: demand voting rights, Medicare and the chance to drive SUVs.

"They take a look around and say, "Hey, this is America, this is a free lunch in a whole different way,'" says Hartmann. "They want jobs, duplexes and acceptance just like the rest of us."

In what he describes as his "Frontline-style mockumentary," as the zombies pursue citizenship, the media blow the story out of proportion, while corporations see a cash cow and began catering to zombies as consumers. Eventually, this makes it possible for a zombie to run for president. Hartmann, a local actor, says he got the idea for the film during the 2000 Missouri Senate election when Mel Carnahan posthumously beat John Ashcroft.

Hartmann is seeking dozens of potential actors (everything from speaking parts to zombies to extras) to help make his film a reality and has a casting call Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Atwood Community Center. Asked about his goal for the movie, Hartmann says he hopes to "premiere it around Madison and send it to as many film festivals as I can."

More Moore & Reppion: Raise the Dead

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Comic Book Resources:
When we last spoke with writers Leah Moore and John Reppion, the pair were promoting “Witchblade: Shades of Gray,” which arrives in stores next month. In that interview, Reppion mentioned that he and Moore had just finished scripting the first issue of their second mini-series for Dynamite Entertainment, and that it would see release in March. That second mini-series, it turns out, is “Raise The Dead,” a zombie apocalypse story that Dynamite promises will set a new standard in horror storytelling. CBR News dug up once again Leah Moore and John Reppion to writhe around and talk about the new mini-series.

The story begins in the middle of a zombie infestation, with a disparate group of seven people forced to cooperate with each other in order to survive. While Moore and Reppion are keeping quiet about many of the details so as not to spoil the reading experience for hardcore zombie fans (which both writers are), CBR News has learned that among the large principle cast are a geek, two children and a middle-aged real estate baron. “What's that you say?” said Leah Moore. “Isn't there supposed to be a Navy Seal or tough policeman who saves them all the time and has a shotgun? Not this time.”

CD Release Party in Morgantown + Zombie Flick TONIGHT

From DAA&E:
If your favorite store is out of black eyeliner, don't worry it's not discontinued. Morgantown's Descension Rate is just preparing for its CD release party Saturday night at 123 Pleasant St.
The album, ''Deadly Elegance,'' is the industrial/electronic band's first full-length. Although the original release date was Nov. 11, the band did not receive the CDs until December and decided to put off the release show until people were back in town.

Compared to the band's previous EP's, singer Jeff Jordan considers this album more professional-looking.

''We've done CD-Rs before,'' Jordan said. ''We went all out on this one -- we had someone do the art and had it pressed.''

Also, Jordan feels ''Deadly Elegance'' shows how the band really sounds live. Previous
recordings were recorded with a friend and the band didn't have a lot of say in it.
Descension Rate is not going to settle for just any CD release show -- the band wants the whole night to be an experience.

The show will start promptly at 10 p.m., with half-hour DJ sets from three band members and DJ Blackout from Mayday! Also, throughout the night several televisions will show zombie movie, ''Die and Let Live'' by West Virginia University student Justin Channell.

''We're trying to emulate a goth night from a big city,'' Jordan said. ''It'll be a lot of fun, tongue-in-cheek stuff.''

Also playing Saturday will be gothic industrial rock band, Beloved Dead.
For more information on Descension Rate and to hear MP3s from ''Deadly Elegance,'' visit www.myspace.com/descensionrate.
Saturday's show starts at 10 p.m. and costs $5 at the door.

The Abandoned Review

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Graphic Novel Review:
The cover of Ross Campbell's zombie graphic novel The Abandoned (Tokyopop) provides a small double-take moment for the reader. It features the book's heroine, punkishly coiffed Rylie, holding what first looks to be a bloody bludgeon, blood spattered on her shoulder and around her pierced lower lip. It takes several seconds for the reader to register that the "weapon" Rylie's holding is a gore-dripping toilet plunger. When you're in the midst of an unexpected zombie attack, you use what tools are at hand.

ZAGG Updates Update

So, guys and gals, I've gone over this coming semester's schedule (which begins tomorrow) and have decided that ZAGG will get updated once a week, on Saturday mornings. Why just once a week? Well, to be honest, it seems as though the wild zombie crazy we've been having might be dying down (no pun intended) a bit. The fact is that it takes me about a week to accumulate the same amount of news it took me just a day or two to get about a year ago. So, time-wise, it makes more sense for me to do it like this.

Fear not. I've been a zombie fan long before this most recent popularity cycle and will be for some time to come. So I do intend to keep updating ZAGG, and getting those reviews and interviews here and there. If there's another jump in the amount of news, maybe I'll push updates to twice a week. Who knows?

So, that's that. Thanks for your continued support and expect the next update on the 27th!

Cheers,
Kriscinda

House of Re-Animator Canned?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From The Horror Yearbook:

I was going to wait for Molly Celaschi’s, San Jose “Fangoria Weekend of Horrors” report for this news, but it’s too sad not to post. Johnny Truant (Our “Man on the Street”) had tipped us off about a possible Re-Animator Trilogy (READ HERE), but according to Jeffrey Combs, this weekend, it looks like it may never happen. Since the material in “House of Re-Animator” is becoming dated, with the defeat of the Bush administration, we may never see the sequel.

I of course did not write anything down during the talk, but those guys over at Esplatter did (Hey, were you those guys sitting behind me?), and got this quote from Jeffrey:

“A year ago I would have told you that looks like that’s happening,” he said. “At this time I’d say maybe the air has gone out of that. … That’s sleeping right now. I don’t imagine that will wake up. The problem is the script we wanted to do is very topical.”

...just a note...there is a Re-Animator Trilogy. Did these folks miss Beyond Re-Animator? I mean, yes, it blew and all but it's still exists.

Dead West Update

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fango:

Reflecting a palpable desire to get back in the horror game, Green says he and WEST’s producers were eager to move the project along in lieu of subjecting it to cobweb growth until the director is through with GOD. “So far, working with Jacob has been awesome,” he says. “We’re approaching this as a true Western…that just so happens to be splattered with extremely gory horror and violence. I’m sure fans of the graphic novel will appreciate that we’re not looking to make yet another ‘zombie flick.’ Just imagine one of the Leone spaghetti Westerns—if the Indians came back from the dead and can still fight as viciously and intelligently as they did in life. It’s going to be brutal.”

If all goes smoothly, WEST is eyeing the end of this year for a production start—unless HATCHET’s bayou-bathing bully, Victor Crowley, interferes.

One More Last Man

From KVOA News 4:

Explosions? Zombies? Gunfights?

It may sound like a scene right of a movie script.

That's because it is.

Sunday, a gun carrying maniac fired shots at people in the middle of Downtown Tucson.

"City hall we're blowing up. Superior Court, we're blowing up. Federal Court, we're blowing up. We're just going crazy blowing up everything."

James Arnett is not on the terror watch list, though he hopes he's on Hollywood's watch list.

"We're actually the first company to make this into a feature length film," he says.

He's directing a movie called 'The Last Man.' It's a thriller about a pandemic sweeping across earth.

And there's only one man left in a world of zombies.

You mean, like 1964's "The Last Man on Earth"--the story of the only man left in a world of vampires, being remade, last I heard?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Dr. Robert Morgan (Vincent Price) is the only survivor of a devastating world-wide plague due to a mysterious immunity he acquired to the bacterium while working in Central America years ago. He is all alone now...or so it seems. As night falls, plague victims begin to leave their graves, part of a hellish undead army that''s thirsting for blood...his!
Or, how about this "The Last Man" circa 2002?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
A comedy that follows the last man on earth--Alan, a portly, graduate student who wanders a post-apocalyptic wasteland, documenting his thoughts for some race that may discover his remains posthumously. The Apocalypse takes on a whole new light when he meets Sarah, a beautiful young woman who doesn't like to be alone. They forge a survivor's bond. Then a friendship. Then a romance. Their slitary journey takes a dramatic U-turn with the appearance of a third wheel--the charming and handsome (though not too bright), Raphael. Alan begins to face the horrible reality that even with virtually no competition, there is always someone better. Then, he turns from Utopian ideals to low-down murder.
...maybe even Mary Shelley's 1826 novel "The Last Man":
The central character, Lionel Verney, son of a nobleman who gambled himself into poverty, prides himself on his ruggedness and manliness, but eventually is restored to the gentry and educates himself. Much of the novel deals with his relationships with family and friends of his class, and the terrible wars that go on around them, including one in which a woman friend of Verney's masquerades as a man in order to fight. A plague gradually kills off all people. Verney finds himself immune after being attacked by an infected "negro," and copes with a civilization that is gradually dying out around him.
...which was made into a film called "The Last Man on Earth" in 1924:

In the futuristic year of 1960, a plague, known as male-itis has killed every fertile man on Earth over the age of 12. Boys under the age of 12 have been vaccinated, but they are all rendered sterile. Womankind takes over the world and a woman becomes President of the United States. Meanwhile, a female aviator, Gertie (played by Grace Cunard), flying over the Ozarks finds smoke rising from the chimney of a cabin. She discovers a reclusive hillbilly, named Elmer Smith (played by Earle Foxe) living there with his sweetheart Hattie (Derelys Perdue). He is captured and examined at a medical hospital. All the women in the world soon begin to fight over Smith.

This film emphasized two events still very memorable at the time. The 1918 influenza epidemic, and women winning the right to vote (1920).

How about the comic, "Y: The Last Man":

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Y: The Last Man is Vaughan's attempt to subvert the classic male fantasy of being the last man on earth. In the series, something (speculated to be a plague) simultaneously kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome - including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm - with the exception of Yorick Brown, a young amateur escape artist, and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand.

Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men, their survivors' guilt, and the knowledge that humanity is doomed to extinction. Vaughan meticulously crafts the new society that emerges out of this chaos, from the conversion of the phallic Washington Monument to a monument to the dead men, to the genesis of the fanatical ultra-feminist Daughters of the Amazon, who believe that Mother Earth cleansed itself of the "aberration" of the Y chromosome, to male impersonators becoming valued romantically and professionally.

Over the course of their journey, Yorick and his friends discover how society has coped in the aftermath of the plague. However, many of the women they encounter have ulterior motives in regard to Yorick. Though the subject matter of the series is entirely serious, Y: The Last Man is also noted for its humor. Yorick in particular is a source of one-liners, although the other characters have their moments as well.

Zombies, vampires, women...it's all the same. What an original concept.

Zombie Birds

From BNN:

In Austin, Texas on Monday January 8, at least 63 birds dropped dead.

This prompted authorities to close down 10 square blocks of the city’s downtown for much of the day. A homeless gentleman in the area was interviewed and stated that not only did he see dead birds, but strange-acting dying birds as well.

Local folks are calling the avians the “Undead Zombie Birds.”

Zombies Invade Biddeford

From WCSH6.com:
Dozens of the "undead" from all around New England made their way to Biddeford Saturday for their chance at immortality on the silver screen.

More than 70 zombies showed up, sporting blood and guts and severed limbs, all trying out to be extras in a movie.

It was each zombie's big chance to shine. Producer John Lane says this zombie movie has hidden meaning, a different twist.

"The zombies aren't really trying to kill people, as much as they're trying to explain what happened," said Lane.

Night of the Living Dead in 30 Seconds

Friday the 13th Remake Update

From Fango:
A new year is upon us, and that means renewed rumors regarding the return of Jason Voorhees (which we last reported on here). But before that happens, allow Fango to give you a solid update from Platinum Dunes' Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, the producers behind Leatherface's recent exploits as well the new HITCHER hitting screens January 19 from Rogue. While attending a screening of that particular update, Fango spoke to Fuller, who's gearing up for a busy year ahead with a number of projects. "We were actually just talking about FRIDAY THE 13th today," he says. So the project isn't adrift somewhere in Crystal Lake? Not according to the more vocal one of Dunes' busy team. In fact, it sounds like the who-owns-what debate surrounding the next chapter is being smoothed out: "We'll be doing it with Paramount and New Line." Look for more on this as well as their other upcoming films Monday, when Fango sits down for an in-depth discussion with the Dunes duo.

As we previously reported here, Eli Roth and Rob Zombie are creating previews for THANKSGIVING and WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS, respectively, and now Rodriguez tells us that Wright is lending a coming attraction all his own. What he has up his sleeve is unknown at this time, but we’re looking into it!

Trading spaces in the land of the dead comes to us in "Zombies By Design", a good idea hampered by poor execution.

This time around, it's an incredible longshot combination: a housewife on the outs with her husband signs on for a home makeover reality show--you know, like "Trading Spaces"?--in a last-ditch effort to rebuild the dying marriage. Meanwhile, at about the same time, her husband has his own plans for the broadcast, involving a horde of mind-controlled zombies.

Resident Evil 4: No Zombies?

From Games Digest:
The creator of the original Resident Evil has returned to the series, to tear up the rule book. Resident Evil 4, the next in the series for Nintendo’s GameCube, will not feature zombies for starters.

Instead, the sequel, set four years after the destruction of zombie-infested Raccoon City, will see Raccoon survivor Leon hunting for the US president’s daughter in remote eastern Europe. With zombies gone, the foes seem to be occult monks and scary hick villagers, both with a touch of decay about them, but with a touch of smarts.

I suppose occult monks and scary hick villagers are okay, but...no zombies? Really?

IT Zombie Identity

From IT Business:
It doesn’t matter whether you’re making a resolution for the new year or a new day. The point is to change who you are. It’s not always a case of completely transforming yourself: you just want to be recognized as something other than one of David Berreby’s zombies.

An online forum conducted by Edge.org recently asked a slew of scientists and intellectuals what they are optimistic about. Berreby, the author Us and Them: Understanding Your Tribal Mind, said he was hopeful that the idea of a “zombie identity is coming to an end, or at least being put into greater context. I’ll let Berreby explain the notion of a zombie identity himself.

From NJ.com:
Usually around this time of year the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey mounts a show called "First Look Emerging Artists," often a big, sprawling exhibit of many media and more philosophical disciplines than any single person can keep in mind at one time. This year's "First Look," the first in its newly expanded exhibition gallery, is much smaller than that, just 10 artists, and devoted entirely to one medium: contemporary sculpture...

Then there's Nathan Skiles' "Zombie Trap," which features a cracked tombstone made of wood, paper and styrofoam over which an elaborate, counter-weighted armature stands, dangling what appear to be a severed arm, finger and toe close to the gallery floor. The idea is, if there is a zombie there, he will reach up through the polyeurethaned floor, grab the faux severed limbs and ... well, you get the picture. So does the Sarasota, Fla.-based Skiles, since part of the trap is a tripodded camera, ready to snap the proof of zombie existence.

Johnny Depp: Zombie for a Day?

From Louth Today:
A PAIR of budding movie moguls are trying to raise £100,000 to fund their first film and convince Hollywood star Johnny Depp to be a zombie for a day.Andrew Cargill, 20, from Fanthorpe Lane, Louth, and his university pal Tony Lane, 28 from Grimsby, have big plans for Indywood, their movie company.

The duo have started a petition to try and convince Johnny Depp to star in their film, a B-movie spoof called Invasion of the Not Quite Dead.

Tony said: "I know where he has a house – so I'll deliver it personally."

On January 1 they launched a website to try and make £100,000 by selling square spaces to people who want to help fund the film.

Andrew said: "Once people sign up they get their own profile page, a bit like the My Space website."

One square costs £10.19 or $20 and it provides a link to the owner's profile page.
In June one person from the site will be picked at random to win ten per cent of the money they make.

A distribution company to sell the film and others is also in the pipeline.
Tony said controversial filmmaker Ken Russell has said he would like them to sell some films he is making.

Both Andrew and Tony are in their final year at the International Film School in Newport, Wales.
