New Friday the 13th

Image hosting by Photobucket

From Fango:
Variety reports that New Line Cinema, ending a long period of speculation, is moving forward with a new FRIDAY THE 13TH movie. And it's coming sooner than might have been expected; the studio is aiming to have the film in theaters Friday, October 13, 2006. Rather than a FREDDY VS. JASON follow-up, the new feature will go back to explore the origins of Jason Voorhees. That's all that's been reported right now, but we'll be looking into this and bringing you updates just as soon as we can.

Stephen King's Cell
First Two Chapters

Image hosting by Photobucket

That's right...read the first two chapters right here at Entertainment Weekly:
The event that came to be known as The Pulse began at 3:03 p.m., eastern standard time, on the afternoon of October 1. The term was a misnomer, of course, but within ten hours of the event, most of the scientists capable of pointing this out were either dead or insane. The name hardly mattered, in any case. What mattered was the effect.

Zombies: La blonde la brute et le truand

This is pretty neat, and we can thank the French for it. (Fear not, scroll down for English). From Asmodée Éditions:

Image hosting by Photobucket
Image hosting by Photobucket

    Adrienne Barbeau Autobiography

    Image hosting by Photobucket

Yes, you know you love her from The Fog and Creepshow, not to mention many non-zombie films! From Fango:

Adding to an already impressive 2006 booking of genre notables (see our previous news item here), Del Howison, proprietor of the Burbank, CA horror bookstore Dark Delicacies (4213 West Burbank Boulevard), has announced that actress Adrienne Barbeau will appear in person on Wednesday, May 10 to sign her autobiography THERE ARE WORSE THINGS I COULD DO: FROM BROADWAY TO B MOVIES…OR BUST.

The hardcover book (available March 12 from Carroll & Graf) covers Barbeau’s acting career, touching on her time on Broadway (in GREASE, from which the title is derived) as well as in Hollywood, as she offers up tales concerning her roles in horror faves like THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, SWAMP THING and CREEPSHOW. Additional topics include her time spent as a go-go dancer prior to breaking into acting, her five-year marriage to director John Carpenter, her involvement with the defunct Showtime series CARNIVÀLE (for which she won a Best Actress in a Television Drama award from The Women’s Image Network), her past romance with Burt Reynolds (during the production of CANNONBALL RUN) and her marriage to a much younger man, writer Billy Van Zandt (and subsequently giving birth to twins at age 51). The actress, who will next appear on screen in director Daryl Goldberg’s supernatural film UNHOLY (alongside BUFFY alumnus Nicholas Brendon; see our most recent item here), will commence signing her 325-page memoir at 7 p.m.

    I Am Legend Remake

    Image hosting by Photobucket

This might really be considered "vampre news," but seeing as though the original film is on so many zombie film list, I figured this news was relevant. From Bloody-Disgusting:
Dark Horizons discovered that Warner Brothers is close to a deal to rent New York's Kingsbridge Armory as a studio set for a movie version of Richard Matheson's famous apocalyptic novel I Am Legend reports the New York Daily News. Warner is in the process of closing a deal to rent the entire 190,950-square-foot first floor interior of the armory for seven months from February 27th through September 30th. I Am Legend, which was originally set in Los Angeles, centers on the lone survivor of a plague that has transformed the world's population into blood-sucking vampires. It has undergone many development changes over the years with differing people ranging from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Will Smith involved.

    Special dEaD

    Image hosting by Photobucket

    From Fango:
In regards to THE SPECIAL dEaD’s storyline, the synopsis reads: “When a zombie plague infects Camp Special Dude, a dude ranch for the mentally handicapped, a ragtag band of campers and counselors struggle to survive the night. Led by the indifferent, nunchuck-wielding head counselor Mac and his wheelchair-bound sister Dale, the unlikely heroes fight their way off the mountain as, one by one, they’re picked off and join the ranks of the walking dead. It’s a campy stampede of blood, boobs and gore as some ‘very special’ people show that they can kick some serious undead ass.”

Obviously, Phillips and screenwriter Jared Tweedie did not draw inspiration from the recent spate of grim, serious-minded horror hits like SAW II and HOSTEL. “The horror films of the late ’70s and early ’80s were the best,” the director says of his inspiration. “And that’s what we set as our model. THE SPECIAL dEaD is campy, extra bloody and gory, not to mention some boobs thrown into the mix. Horror films of late have gotten away from the fun aspect, but we didn’t. A lot of these new horror movies have 10 to 15 minutes of actual monsters or zombies or vampires; the rest of the time they sit around talking about how they’re going to survive the night or get away. Not THE SPECIAL dEaD. It never lets up; it’s a balls-to-the-wall good and bloody time from the beginning to the end.”

THE SPECIAL dEaD will premiere in Hollywood at the end of February, and Phillips hopes fright fanatics and potential distributors will appreciate his genre combo. “It’s EVIL DEAD meets SOMETHING ABOUT MARY or SHAUN OF THE DEAD meets SOUTH PARK,” he says. “But whatever it is, it’s funny, scary and definitely worth watching for any horror fan, or comedy fan for that matter. THE SPECIAL dEaD was made for horror fans, and I feel they’ll love it.”

    Martin Screening in NYC

    Image hosting by Photobucket

This is only very tenuously zombie related.

    From Fango:
Brooklyn, NY’s BAMcinématek at the BAM Rose Cinemas (30 Lafayette Avenue) has announced the all-35mm-print lineup for “Some Kind of Horror Show,” an eclectic assortment of genre fare ranging from vintage vampires to Japanese ghosts to North American slashers, running March 6-30.
The reason I mention this is as follows:

    • Monday, March 27: George A. Romero’s MARTIN at 6:50 and 9:30 p.m.

This is a good opportuntiy to see Martin on a big screen. Click here for more details of the other titles showing and ticket information. Anthropophagus

    Image hosting by Photobucket

    From Fango:
ANTHROPOPHAGUS has been delayed for a number of reasons, he says. It took some time getting all the materials, and then we ran into some technical issues which have finally been corrected. Obviously, given past problems, we found it much more important to correct them and delay the release than put it out on time with the problems, even at the risk of people grumbling about its delay. But it all seems to check out now, and the release will be a rockin' one; it should be ready to ship by the end of this month. The package includes an anamorphic 1.85:1 transfer of the uncut movie, with audio tracks (both mono) in English and Italian with new English subtitles; Joe D'Amato Totally Uncut 2: The Horror Films (an hour-long documentary, in Italian with English subs); a 2005 live appearance by stars George Eastman and Zora Kerova discussing ANTHROPOPHAGUS; alternate opening credits sequences; and trailers. Retail price is $19.95.

Written by John Muggleton, the movie is described as FAWLTY TOWERS meets THE EVIL DEAD and stars Kelly as a guy who accidentally runs over and kills his gal pal (Caitlin Delaney). But she's not gone for long; she comes back as a flesheating zombie, which puts a bit of a strain on their relationship. Ralph Gethings was in charge of FX on the movie, which will be released by an as-yet-unnamed DVD company later this year.

    Zombies in Fango!

    Image hosting by Photobucket

I sometimes debate as to whether or not I want to pick up the latest Fango. It's been hit and miss with me, frankly, since they started putting more than just a few color panels in the middle of the mag. I miss the days of the black and white course grained paper. That's just me. Times change and everything becomes flashy...and Fango hits issue #250. Seems like issue #150 was just yesterday...
Anyway...so, pick it up, or no? I say pick it up. Here's a few zombie reasons why:

There’s a big ol’ George Romero interview in which he retrospectively takes a look at Land of the Dead, a big article on Tamara, and one on the Masters of Horror series (Dance of the Dead, The Homecoming). There’s also a page on Night of the Living Dead 3D, a snippet for Jamie Russell’s Book of the Dead, and, of course, a smattering of zombie flicks on the Video Chopping List.

It's also that time of year again...time to vote on Fangoria's Chainsaw Awards:

Land of the Dead is up for Best Wide-Release film, John Leguizamo is up for Best Actor for Land, Robert Joy for Best Supporting Actor for Land, Mr. Romero for Best Screenplay...you guessed it, for Land. Also, Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger are up for Best Makeup/Creature FX...for Land. That's all as far as zombies go...you'll have to pick up the issue, or click here, for the rest of the runners. Don't forget to think hard on both the Worst Film and your vote on who next to induct into the Fangoria Hall of Fame.

Speaking of Fango...you can go here, to their site, to possibly win an All Soul's Day DVD--the deadline is Feb. 6. Want to up your chances of winning this particular movie? Go to All Things Zombie and enter DeadKev's contest as well. This one ends sooner--Jan. 31st.

Third Tales from the Crypt movie - Ritual

    Image hosting by Photobucket

    From Bloody-Disgusting:
It's been a long long time since we've heard anything about the third and final Tales from the Crypt film entitled Ritual. Today DVD Times writes, "Tales From The Crypt presents RITUAL, a chilling tale of a young doctor caught in a web of voodoo, lust and greed, from the producers of “House of Wax” and “Gothika.” To escape the chaos of New York City, Doctor Alice Dodgson (Jennifer Grey) takes a job as the personal physician to a wealthy plantation heir on the island of Jamaica. Upon arrival she discovers that her patient, Wesley, believes he’s possessed and under a voodoo spell. Wesley’s brother pressures Alice to find out what’s wrong, but whispers of a voodoo cult grow when the locals begin to die under gruesome circumstances. Presented in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English Dolby Digital Surround Sound and optional Spanish subtitles, there are no listed extras. The DVD will be available to own on May 2nd.
    Synopsis:
Inspired by director Jacques Tourneur's 1943 classic "I Walked with a Zombie," this new offering explores the mystical and sensual, yet often times terrifying world of Voodoo spirituality. A dedicated oncologist, Dr. Alice Dodgson (Grey), must compromise her strict belief in western medicine when she encounters the mysterious Obeah culture on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. Hired by wealthy American Paul Clayborne (Sheffer), Alice travels to the exotic locale to treat a cancer patient, Paul's brother Wesley (Lapaine). Upon her arrival, Alice finds herself immersed in the rhythm and harmony of this foreign civilization. Immediately, Alice is besieged by the locals with tales of zombies and possession. Though she dismisses the fantastical yarns as tropical ghost stories, what she is about to experience will change her point of view. Gradually, Alice learns about the magical and musical native culture while she attempts to treat the despondent Wesley with her proven scientific methods. Wesley reluctantly buys into Alice's enduring optimism. Making her job much more difficult, the emotional attachment that Alice and Wesley share as doctor and patient gradually develops into stronger feelings of love and desire. Alice finally comes to the realization that Wesley is not only suffering from a unique strand of cancer, but is also a victim of a powerful Voodoo Priest! Her first move is to figure out who on the island wants Wesley dead, and why. Alice must ultimately submit to the strange and sensual native culture to save her beloved Wesley's life, facing off against a seductive Voodoo queen as she fights fire with fire.

You make the best coffee, Zombie Jane Wyman.

Here is a piece painted by Jimmy Mack the Heart Attack. For those of you who don't know, Jane Wyman was an actress, she starred in Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows in 1955, which inspired the Todd Haynes movie Far From Heaven in 2002 (which might explain why Rock Hudson is black in this painting). She was also Ronald Reagan's first wife.

    Zombie News

To answer a question that was posed to me...are there any movies with cowboys and zombies?

    Image hosting by Photobucket

Well, there is the indie production The Quick and the Undead. And back in May of last year, there was this announcement at CHUD.com:
Speaking of the Man with No Name and Old West archetypes, Chow will also strap on the six-shooters to play an undead-destroying gunslinger named Rellik in director Andrew Goth’s The Wretched, which will finally satisfy the demand for an entry in the elusive “zombie western” genre. I recently caught Goth’s debut, the cop-horror flick Cold & Dark (I should have a DVD Rack review of it some time soon), but I’ll say that his new flick should look great at the very least. Chow was long attached to a western about a vengeful Chinese rail worker (possibly reuniting him with John Woo), but that seems to have vanished. Personally, I’d rather see him blasting zombies to pieces anyway.
    Synopsis:
The name of a young Bounty-Hunter is spreading across the West. That name is Twenty-One. It comes from a left hand that bears six fingers. His deadly reputation comes from his right hand that wields a gun. Twenty-One is bringing his latest quarry to justice when he meets the enigmatic Rellik. It seems the men have two things in common; both are Bounty-Hunters and both are stupendously fast with a gun.

While it's also mentioned here, here, and here, I don't know where it is in regards to its production, if it is at all.

    (Thanks Nate).

I was informed of an update regarding
Zombie Queen: A Postmodern Post-Apocalyptic Romantic Comedy Horror Film by William Weird:
Respected NEPA-area stage actress Molly McPhearson has left the fledgling independent horror/comedy feature due to an exhaustive work schedule. The role she's vacated is that of the female lead. Filmmakers William Weird and William Berkowitz, however, are currently hard at work at filling her role and are confident that they'll be able to find a replacement soon. The abrupt last-minute departure, unfortunately, will further stall the already vastly pushed back shooting schedule though.
Lots of luck to these folks in filling this role, and hey, if you happen to live near the Nanticoke, Pa area, you might want to audition!

    Synopsis:
"A tiny little island off the East Coast of America, that sits on its own tiny little fault in the underlying tectonic plate. An odd little history ignored by almost everyone. Until the night of the big storm, and the creak in the fault line, and the release of something foul from the earth's guts, blown across the little town on Smoky Island. And the only two people on the island who were outside its reach are now trapped on a black spit of rock with a population who aren't people anymore.

    Romero's Toe Tags

    Image hosting by Photobucket
    Romero:
"The other thing I've got going on is that I've got a comic book coming out that I wrote. DC Comics called me up. They are doing a series called Toe Tags, limited-edition, six-issue storylines, eventually put out in bound editions. The illustrations are great, a guy named Tommy Castillo did the artwork. The plot once again revolves around a dead world. I'm not sure how much I can talk about it. I know there's some stuff they want to keep under wraps. I believe they're going to have advance copies out later this month. I think the first issues comes out in October. It was really fun, man. It was really liberating because it's a longer form than a conventional script. You don't have to worry about, shit, how am I going to shoot this? You just have to be able to draw it.”
Some old info from Ain't It Cool News is here. These were released in October of 2004.

And there's a lot of people who may have missed whatever it is that I'm posting, so I'm affording them the opportunity to check it out if they'd like.

Thanks to Nate for digging up most of this info!

    Zombie Things & Stuff

    Cell

Stephen King's zombie novel Cell should be available in a few days! You can order it here.
Civilization doesn't end with a bang or a whimper. It ends with a call on your cell phone.

What happens on the afternoon of October 1 came to be known as the Pulse, a signal sent though every operating cell phone that turns its user into something...well, something less than human. Savage, murderous, unthinking-and on a wanton rampage. Terrorist act? Cyber prank gone haywire? It really doesn't matter, not to the people who avoided the technological attack. What matters to them is surviving the aftermath. Before long a band of them-"normies" is how they think of themselves-have gathered on the grounds of Gaiten Academy, where the headmaster and one remaining student have something awesome and terrifying to show them on the school's moonlit soccer field. Clearly there can be no escape. The only option is to take them on.

CELL is classic Stephen King, a story of gory horror and white-knuckling suspense that makes the unimaginable entirely plausible and totally fascinating.

    The Rage

Here's the new poster for Kurtzman's The Rage, and don't forget to check out the new website, freshly launched today. I'm still on the fence about this being a zombie movie. I think in the end, it'll be just one more title to fuel the "Is it a zombie movie or not a zombie movie" fire a la 28 Days Later.

I know this poster makes a lot of you guys very happy...but you have to admit, it's rather silly.

"What if zombies didn't eat brains? How would people deal with their long-deceased relatives, lovers, friends, and enemies? And how would the dead cope with the realization that life really had gone on without them?"

    Severed

    Image hosted by Photobucket.com

    From Twitch (downloadble trailer):
A good while back a friendly film-programmer type dropped me a note and told me to be on the lookout for Carl Bessai's Severed. Well, okay, I thought, but it seemed like a bit of a strange instruction since Bessai is best known in these parts for making quiet little family dramas. They're good family dramas to be sure - the man did get Ian McKellan to come to Canada and make Emile for pocket change on the strength of his writing - but what would Carl Bessai be doing of interest to a site like Twitch?

    Answer: Zombies.

Shot on location in the forests of British Columbia Severed is the story of a logging experiment gone wrong ... genetically altered tree hormones get into the human population with horrific results. The film just played at Screamfest in LA, so if anybody caught it we'd love to hear what you thought ...

Now, it looked as though we were going to have an exclusive on this but it appears that in the lag between the producers dropping the trailer DVD in the mail to me and it actually arriving they went and made the trailer available in streaming and greatly ad-molested form over on IFilm. But if you want to see the thing without being swamped by ads and you want to be able to download it to hold close to your breast while it whispers sweet nothings in your ear, we've got you covered ...

See what happens when you ignore the NAFTA rules governing the softwood lumber trade, Mr. Bush? Hordes of the undead come to eat your brains! Get the axe!

    Finally, The Resurrection Game!

    From Pretty-Scary:
Amy Lynn Best's very first production EVER, The Resurrection Game, is finally complete. The “zombie-noir” feature was shot on 16mm, and was the first feature film produced by the Pittsburgh-based Happy Cloud Pictures group. Amy not only starred, but produced this film, (and from what i hear, wasn't too shabby on helping out with all other aspects of the production). Amy has gone on to direct several more films for Happy Cloud Pictures, including Severe Injuries and The Spicy Sisters Slumber Party.

Set in the near future, The Resurrection Game tells the story of a world where the dead have begun to walk. The streets are littered with the shambling undead. After the screaming stopped, people just got used to them. Now commercials use the zombie “Infestation” to sell soft drinks, and the most popular nighttime talk show is hosted by a zombie puppet named Necro-Phil. But one night, a down-on-his-luck ex-police detective, Jim Campbell, receives a mysterious video-call from the world-renowned horror author, Christopher Pope. Pope’s sales are plummeting. “Who wants to read about vampires when there are zombies outside on your lawn?” He makes Campbell an offer: one million dollars to discover a cure for the Infestation.
