Special dEaD
In regards to THE SPECIAL dEaD’s storyline, the synopsis reads: “When a zombie plague infects Camp Special Dude, a dude ranch for the mentally handicapped, a ragtag band of campers and counselors struggle to survive the night. Led by the indifferent, nunchuck-wielding head counselor Mac and his wheelchair-bound sister Dale, the unlikely heroes fight their way off the mountain as, one by one, they’re picked off and join the ranks of the walking dead. It’s a campy stampede of blood, boobs and gore as some ‘very special’ people show that they can kick some serious undead ass.”Check out the website for the trailer and more.
Obviously, Phillips and screenwriter Jared Tweedie did not draw inspiration from the recent spate of grim, serious-minded horror hits like SAW II and HOSTEL. “The horror films of the late ’70s and early ’80s were the best,” the director says of his inspiration. “And that’s what we set as our model. THE SPECIAL dEaD is campy, extra bloody and gory, not to mention some boobs thrown into the mix. Horror films of late have gotten away from the fun aspect, but we didn’t. A lot of these new horror movies have 10 to 15 minutes of actual monsters or zombies or vampires; the rest of the time they sit around talking about how they’re going to survive the night or get away. Not THE SPECIAL dEaD. It never lets up; it’s a balls-to-the-wall good and bloody time from the beginning to the end.”
THE SPECIAL dEaD will premiere in Hollywood at the end of February, and Phillips hopes fright fanatics and potential distributors will appreciate his genre combo. “It’s EVIL DEAD meets SOMETHING ABOUT MARY or SHAUN OF THE DEAD meets SOUTH PARK,” he says. “But whatever it is, it’s funny, scary and definitely worth watching for any horror fan, or comedy fan for that matter. THE SPECIAL dEaD was made for horror fans, and I feel they’ll love it.”
