Tobe Hooper's Mortuary

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Lucky you if you happen to live in Fresno, Ca, as it will be opening at six locations there on Firday, January 13th. Those gross numbers will determine a wider release...so, obviously, the message here is for everyone in Fresno to go see it at all six locations, as many times as possible, so the rest of us can see it on a big screen. Echo Bridge Entertainment will be bringing us the DVD at an as of yet unnamed date. Go to the site for theatre listings.

Schotten Filmworks' Sabbath

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

The story studies what would happen when the last soul of humanity is let into heaven and the first sinner is allowed out of Hell. The result includes the dead rising, demons roaming the Earth and Hell spitting out a frightening creature called "The Screamer."

The folks who brought you Dead Life have finished up the edit on their upcoming flick, Sabbath, and are in the process of doing the soundmix. They should be finished up sometime in January, and I assume we'll have access to it shortly thereafter.

Zombie News

From Bloody-Disgusting:

Resident Evil Rumor...eek!
The beautiful Sienna Guillory is set to reprise her role as Jill Valentine in Sony Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Afterlife, according to Wikipedia. Also returning (obviously) is the leading lady Milla Jovovich, who will once again play Alice, while Mike Epps announced a few weeks back that he would return during an interview. Our scooper also sent us in these exclusive bits: we can "EXPECT" Leon Kennedy and Wekser (characters from the game) to appear in the film and that shocking enough- Paul W.S. Anderson is tapped to direct once again, off a script he is currently writing. This is all considered rumor until confirmed. Now aiming at a 2007 release, Afterlife will be set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with mutant zombies.

Zombie Pickin's

I didn't notice too much in the line of exciting zombie news, so I thought I'd post a little something about some not often talked about zombie flicks. You may have heard of them, you might not have.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zombietown
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In the film, Local mechanic Jake La Fond's life is suddenly disrupted when mysterious parasites transform the law-abiding citizens of his quaint hometown of Otis, Vermont into hoards of cannibalistic zombies.

Isolated from the outside world by an accident on the only road out of town, Jake turns to Alex, a bio-scientist who is unfortunately also his ex-girlfriend, for help. Together they try to solve the mystery behind this rapidly spreading infection. As the town grows deadlier by the moment, Jake's gun-toting rival, Randy becomes the only one they can trust and the three of them uncover a deadly secret that may be the key to saving the town – if they can survive long enough.

Click here and here for more info. The site says that it's wrapped principal photography, but it's unclear exactly how long ago that was. No news on when it's due out.

Confederate Zombie Massacre
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
From Bloody-Disgusting:
Now this is what I call an achievement in low budget filmmaking. A definite crowd pleaser that I can’t wait to get a hold of on DVD to show all my friends. Director Devi Snively has created nothing short of a masterpiece of comedy horror. Please, please, someone give this man a gob of money to make a feature! Here we have the (allegedly) very true story of a civil war battle that happened where a group of guys use a chemical weapon on the enemy and inadvertently turn them all into zombies. It’s a gore fest filled with cheesy silly humor that kept the audience laughing from the opening credits through to the end! The reason this movie is so successful is that it knows not to take itself seriously, and just moves you along this fun ride. My favorite scene is when our hero gets his head bashed, a zombie eats his brains, he gets up all pissed off and says “No one eats my brains and gets away with it!” It takes me back to the good old days of Peter Jackson making Bad Taste and Dead Alive. The Standout show of the Shriekfest! Buy this film… you wont regret it.

Check out a review here at Pretty-Scary.
This premiered at the Dragon*Con in Georgia this past September. The official site claims that a "DVD with the film and a behind-the-scenes documentary will be available for purchase shortly." When exactly that will be, I do not know.

Poultrygeist! Attack of the Chicken Zombies
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

When the American Chicken Bunker, a military-themed fried-chicken chain, builds a restaurant on the site of an ancient Indian burial ground, local protestors aren’t the only ones crying fowl! The previous tenants, fueled by a supernatural force, take “possession” of the food and those who eat it, and the survivors discover that they must band together before they themselves become the other white meat!

Film lovers have been starved for sustenance. The relentless diet of predictability and pretense Hollywood has been serving up just doesn’t cut it. Poultrygeist is hearty food for thought. In Poultrygeist, Troma takes on the the fast-food industry-skewering the soulless restaurateurs-in the world’s first horror-comedy film to feature zombie chickens, American Indians and a bit of singing and dancing!

It’s Poultrygeist!

Mark Young's Southern Gothic

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
NC filmmaker Mark Young will begin shooting his next film, Southern Gothic, this February. This sounds like zombie action...I'll post more when I know.

From Fango:
The movie is about a religious extremist who, even worse, is a member of the undead, and a troubled alcoholic who tries to find redemption by saving an innocent girl from his clutches. “SOUTHERN GOTHIC is not your typical horror film,” Young tells Fango. “It has depth and subtext, political undertones and complex characterizations. But don’t worry; this fast and ferocious flick has more than enough scenes of physical horror to satisfy even the most diehard gorehound.”
From Twitch:
A film which involves psycotic preachers, possessed children and undead armies.

What The Future Has In Store...

Image hosted by Photobucket.comHi folks. What with the holidays closing in and all the busy, busy, busy---I didn't really get to posy anything today, though that's not to say I didn't get anything done. I thought I'd drop a note to say what's in store for the near future here at ZAGG. I'm looking forward to interviews with The Revelevens--a rockin' Horror-influenced Baltimore band--and Conor McMahon--director of the irish zombie flick, Dead Meat. We should certainly extend our thanks ahead of time to hatefuldisplay and Spiral for making these possible. We'll also be anticipating a review of Raym C. Hensley's book The Zombie Hunter's Bible, and also an interview with Happy Cloud Pictures spokesman Necro-Phil.

Lots of fun going on here, so be sure to check back!

Prison of the Psychotic Damned Trailer.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
The trailer's up, so head here to check it out.
The Buffalo Central Terminal has stood alone, abandoned and decayed since 1977. It has been host to a terrible train accident that took the lives of 200 passengers, it has seen rapes, tortures and murders, it has witnessed black rituals and drug abuse, it has heard the cries of the hopeless and the screams of the insane, It is regarded as one of the most haunted places in the United States. Some have called it the most dangerous place in the world.

On Nov.1st 2005, five urban exploring ghost hunters, lead by noted documentary film maker Rayna Bloom, entered the Buffalo central terminal. One came out.

Prison of the Psychotic Dead is scheduled to be premiered at Buffalo Screams (April 21, 22, 23-2006).

Follow-Up to Zombie Survival Guide

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
From Fango:
Former SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE writer Max Brooks has a follow-up book to his best-selling ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE due early next fall from Random House. Titled WORLD WAR Z, the tome is another deadpan look at the undead genre. “WORLD WAR Z is an oral history of the future zombie war,” Brooks tells Fango. “The idea is that 10 years after the great global zombie epidemic, I go around the world as a reporter and interview survivors. The book is a serious-intentioned collection of their stories. All the rules of THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE apply here. Basically, anyone who has read the first book could survive in the second one.”
How very nifty is this? Very.

Call for News

Hi folks. I'm finding that being in school and being kept busy has allowed me to fall far behind in what's up in horror film related news, though I'm trying very hard to catch up. This is just a little note to say that if you have come across some news, or if you yourself have a zombie flick you'd like to see promoted here and have updates on said zombie flick, then do please drop me a line so I can get it up here.

That is all. Thank you.

Last Rites of the Dead-Trailer

Insane-O-Rama's New York/New Jersey production Last Rites of the Dead is just about wrapping up. The story of LROTD revolves around two militias involved in a battle between the living and the walking dead. From Fango:
"It's a zombie movie called LAST RITES," he (Frank Garfi) tells us, "and it stars Joshua Nelson from STRANGE THINGS, Gina Ramsden and Christa McNamee. In a nutshell, the story involves zombies infesting the Earth, but they're walking and talking among us, so it's not your usual zombie flick. Christa plays the commandant of a militia group of humans who are out to annihilate the zombie population before they overrun the world. Gina plays Angela, who gets caught up in the middle of all this after her boyfriend Josh [Nelson] shoots her and she becomes a zombie. She gets involved in the conflict indirectly, because Josh joins the militia group and she winds up joining an undead militia group led by a character named Solsitce, who is basically the same as the commandant, with the same goal: to start a war between the living and the dead. Solstice believes that zombies are the next evolution of manthe perfect race, because they cannot die."

You can check out the trailer here. It's set for release in April 2006.

Dead Reign in the Works.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Gingold and Fango writes:
Chicago-based Shattering Paradigms Entertainment informed Fango that it is gearing up for its first feature-length movie, a zombie opus called DEAD REIGN. Scheduled to shoot in 2006 under director Gary Michael Schultz from a script he wrote with Alexander Rojas, REIGN is about a rain-borne virus that turns everyone it touches into ravenous ghouls. A group of survivors take shelter in an abandoned warehouse, where they also run afoul of a militia group whose members have begun killing the living and the dead alike. “The characters in our story are gritty and dark,” Schultz says. “They are not perfect people and that’s why they are interesting. Our talented team will create a macabre world that our audiences will experience along with the characters.”

Frank Zeiger III, Winston Evans, adult film star Ron Jeremy and Chicago-based shock jock, Eric “Mancow” Muller have already been cast, with more actors to be announced soon. You can keep up with the movie’s status (and see zombie concept art) at its website.

I'm Very Proud of Myself

I hadn't really been keeping track of the numbers, but I finally got around to auto-numbering my list, and it would seem that I already have about 400 listed here, with about 100 or so more to go. Then I start searching for titles I don't have, as it's been a little bit since I've updated my own list of titles. So, even when I think I'm about done...I won't be. Yay for progress.

'The Homecoming' Interviews

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I spend a lot of my extra time on political blogs trying to keep up with the current state of things, so The Homecoming has been of particular interest to me. I've rounded up a few interviews that might, or might not, be of interest to you folks.

Here's one with Dante over that King of Zembla:

Well, the zombie movie has always been one of the cinema's most disreputable genres, so there was no intent here to "class it up". I limited my usual background doodling to some of the tombstones on view, for John Gilling (director of Hammer's class-conscious PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES), Jacques Tourneur (the mesmerizing I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE) and of course George Romero, who single-handedly transformed the prior West Indies image of the zombie into the shambling mook ghouls of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. I guess the scene in the cemetery looks a little like it. If only it was in black and white!

Here's one with writer Sam Hamm:

We assume most soldiers support the war and the war party. That’s a point we make explicitly in the picture: the ones who died for a cause they believe in—that “noble cause” that the administration has never quite gotten around to defining, whatever it may eventually turn out to be—are at peace. They don’t come back. Our story is not about them. Our story is about vets who believe they were killed for a lie.

Here's one with both Dante and Landis:

I decided to use the opportunity to do something that I felt strongly personally about, and that led me to do an episode of a political nature, which I'm not sure the others are as overtly political. Well, all horror movies are political. In fact, if you ever want to see where the country is at any given time, all you have to do is run the horror movies and/or comedies that were being made at the time and you'll find all the information that you need to find out what was really going on, because they're really the most subversive genres.

Fido-Pet Zombies!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
For some Canadian zombie fare, Anagram Pictures will be bringing us Fido:
Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Terror spread across the land, until a collar was invented that made the zombies docile, even useful. A company was born: ZomCon. Thanks to their patented domestication collar, zombies became gardeners, milkmen, servants, and even pets. ZomCon would like everyone to believe that they have the world under control - but do they?
Andrew Currie directs. He apparently also wrote and directed a zombie short in 1997 called "Night of the Living."
A young boy watches in helpless horror as his alcoholic father turns into a zombie before his very eyes. Vancouver's Andrew Currie adeptly builds tension as young Zack wrestles with the twin demons of imagination and reality.
If anyone has any info on this, let me know.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
c/o Bloody Disgusting, you can have the pleasure of watching the trailer for Uwe Bowles' House of the Dead 2: Dead Aim. Here's a review from Arrow in the Head.
...although I still think the first HOUSE OF THE DEAD is freaking hilarious to sit through in a so bad its good way, HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2 was an “on paper” improvement over it.
Well, that's good to know.

Deadscapes

For those of you who might have been looking forward to the ill-fated Circling the Drain, there is now Deadscapes.
The idea for "Deadscapes" was siphoned from the dying veins of a project called Circling The Drain. The former project reached an untimely end in July of 2005 when the doom of incompletion after a 2 and half year life span weighed in on the makers, thus forcing the situation into a stalemate. The details made public were scarce yet more to the point than an elaborate explanation would've provided. Although unrelated conceptually, this new project shares a genre and an intent long lost and contaminated from the former. The goal of the project itself is to fulfill ambitions of its creator on numerous levels including homage to the genre itself as well as the quest to learn more and grow with the craft of filmmaking.
----------
In the tradition of short films and television series such as "Twilight Zone" and "Tales From The Darkside," "Deadscapes" will attempt (albeit from inexperienced roots and amateur means) to bring about a collection of short films set in the abovementioned world of the living dead. Each episode will be 10-15 minutes and available through this website, The eventuality of a small series is the tentative finish line for this project. At that point the project and accompanying mission statements laid out today will be re-evaluated for the conclusive or continuing decisions to be made.

Night of the Living Dead-3-D

Fangoria:
With all the remake fervor in recent years, few announcements surprise us when it comes to Hollywood reduxes. But would you believe that NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is not only being done again, but has already wrapped! And here’s the catch: This time the zombies will be comin’ at you in three dimensions! FANGORIA has learned that Midnight Movies Entertainment and Lux Digital Pictures GmbH are in the final stages of postproduction on NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D, a new motion picture inspired by the 1968 George A. Romero classic. Exploiting the film’s reputed public-domain status and the recent explosion in zombie flicks, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D shot in and around locations in Los Angeles last summer under the direction of Jeff Broadstreet, helmer of the indie films SEXBOMB and DR. RAGE. Robert Valding penned the update, which reportedly uses the original film more as a jumping-off point than 1990’s faithful Tom Savini-directed version.
What's new? The website's gallery...it'll be updated throughout the next month.

As the few of you that are visiting here know, this is a work in progress. Right now--as I also finish up finals for school--I am working on linking my zombie reference list here. That might take a little bit, and then I can concentrate on finding you folks the up-to-date zombie related news.

If you yourself happen upon some zombie news while I'm busy doing this, please contact me and let me know--be sure to give me a screenname or actual name so that I may give you proper credit.

For now, just use this thread for comments on the Blog and suggestions, or whatever you'd like. If possible, don't just post anonymously (even if you just sign you're name at the bottom of the post to avoid registering)...as I'd like for this to be as community oriented as possible.

New Zealand's Weta Workshop is bringing us Black Sheep:

Generating a huge buzz at the American Film Market is the New Zealand film Black Sheep. Written and directed by Jonathan King and produced by Philippa Campbell. Black Sheep is a horror/comedy inspired by the fact that in New Zealand, sheep outnumber humans 10 to one. The movie explores what happens when a genetic experiment gone wrong turns the sheep into human-eating killers.

Land Part Deux.

From the folks at Empire:
“Now that Land of the Dead did so well in European markets and Japan, and the DVD is flying off shelves, there’s talk of a sequel,” he confirmed.

We say ‘surprised’ because, last time we encountered Romero back in August, he was somewhat down after the movie hadn’t performed well at the US box office, where it had been thrown up against the likes of Batman Begins and War Of The Worlds. But since then, the movie has caught on around the world and Universal/Rogue Pictures and Atmosphere, the production company behind Land are sniffing around a follow-up.

If it happens, a new Dead movie will follow the surviving characters from Land on their journey north, and as such will mark the first time Romero has made a direct sequel to one of his zombie flicks. And this time, there won’t be a lengthy gap between films.

“Frankly, I was ok with that,” because I’d much rather wait for something to happen, laughed Romero, referring to the political subtext that underpins each of his zombie movies. “If they nuke Washington, then I’ve got something. It won’t be in April but it might now be August or something. I hope to God we don’t have to do the winter again, but there’s a real buzz happening now about a sequel.”

Joe Dante's "The Homecoming."

Gingold at Fangoria writes:
Hamm's script takes place in the near future, specifically 2008, when a certain Republican president is running for re-election and a war he duped the nation into fighting still rages on. The central characters are campaign consultant David Murch (Jon Tenney) and right-wing author Jane Cleaver (Thea Gill), who has written a popular book attacking the "radical left,"any resemblance to Ann Coulter is, uh, purely coincidental. After meeting on a dead-on parody of a issues-oriented talk show (Terry David Mulligan is perfect as the host), the two find themselves politically and romantically attractedbut their world is shaken up when the dead begin returning to life. Not all the deceased, mind you, just those who were killed in that particular overseas combat, and they've got a particular-pardon the pun-ax to grind. It's an extrapolation of the Vietnam-era ghoul film DEATHDREAM to the nth degree, the image of the first revived corpse pushing his way out from under the Stars and Stripes that cover his casket is the most pointed and arresting image the genre has recently offered.
