It can't get much worse for Hollywood.
Box office receipts are down for the second straight year, with profit margins that will soon be eclipsed by the gumball machine and collectible lunch box industries. Costco is selling television sets that are bigger than some art house movie screens. And the winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2006 was a film that everyone hated.
The solution couldn't be clearer: Make more movies about zombies.
While the rest of Hollywood sinks into the La Brea tar pits, zombie movies have been enjoying a box office feast matched only by porn and bad superhero films. And even more improbably, these odes to the walking dead have also been extremely good -- somehow satisfying both the horror enthusiast and the Fellini-loving, daylight-hating mainstream movie critic.
