Savini Talks Grindhouse

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fango:
Fango got to chat with makeup master/actor Tom Savini at last weekend’s Monster-Mania con, where the Fango fave shared his thoughts about his role (pictured) in PLANET TERROR, Robert Rodriguez’s half of Dimension’s double-threat feature GRINDHOUSE (opening April 6). This marks a reunion between the director and Savini, who played Sex Machine in Rodriguez’s FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, but Savini promises, “This film makes FROM DUSK TILL DAWN look like BAMBI. The world isn’t prepared for this movie! Get ready, because after Robert’s episode, which will blow your mind, then Quentin [Tarantino’s] comes on to further numb you. Plus there are the [faux] previews, and I understand they’re going to make movies from those. That’s the rumor, anyway—make sure you repeat me saying the word ‘rumor’; I don’t want anyone thinking they can count on that, but it would be cool. GRINDHOUSE was a joy to make, and it’s going to be quite a ride for the audience.”

Living Dead Glasgow Comic

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fango:
Fango got the word from Alan Simpson of the UK horror website Sex Gore Mutants that he has formed SGM Publishing and made LIVING DEAD: GLASGOW his first release. Based on an idea he had way back in the early ’80s after seeing DAY OF THE DEAD at a Glasgow cinema, the comic was written by Simpson with art by his brother John, and deals with a zombie invasion of the Scottish city, packing in lots of “extreme zombie violence and coarse language.” The debut issue also includes the undead comic strip BAD DOG by Gary Northfield and a chronological history of zombie cinema. It’s available now for £2.50 plus postage, and you can order it (though you have to be over 18) by clicking here.

Grindhouse Split for Foreign Audiences?

From Bloody-Disgusting:
For once it's our term to laugh a maniacal laugh of happiness. Usually the US distributors are the ones who decide to cut a single movie into two and release them at separate times... not this time. Variety reported this afternoon that some foreign audiences will be seeing Grindhouse split up into two separate films - one for Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" and the other for Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror".

Full Length Fido Trailer

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From MoviesOnline:
FINALLY the full length trailer for FIDO is online. FIDO is coming to theatres in the us on June 15th but lucky canadian readers will get it on March 16th. Fido takes place in the small town of Willard. Welcome to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the 50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbour, and rotting zombies carry the mail. Years ago, the earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead to rise with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Terror spread across the land, until a collar was invented that made the zombies docile, even useful.

A company was born: ZomCon. Thanks to their patented domestication collar™, zombies became gardeners, milkmen, butlers, and even pets. ZomCon would like everyone to believe that they have the world under control - but do they? Timmy Robinson doesn't think so. He thinks the world is "phony-baloney". An awkward loner, Timmy spends so much time in his room, even his own parents don't notice him. So when Mom buys a zombie to help around the house, Timmy is surprised, and even curious, when the beast wants to play catch. As the pair plays baseball in the park, the zombie saves Timmy from the local bullies. A true friendship is born and Timmy names the zombie, "Fido".

But Fido's collar goes on the fritz, and Timmy's cranky old neighbor Mrs. Henderson pays the ultimate price. That night, Timmy sneaks back to the park to bury her, but discovers it's too late - she's already turned into a flesh-crazed zombie! In a fight to the finish, he chops off her head with a shovel and buries her in a flowerbed. To complicate matters, ZomCon's notorious zombie-control specialist, Mr. Bottoms, has moved in across the street - soon becoming Timmy and Fido's worst nightmare. Lucky for Timmy, Bottoms' daughter Cindy has a crush on him, and becomes a valuable ally... WAtch the first clip below and click the link to watch a whole bunch more. I am stoked for this film! Pakistani Zombies!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fango:

Andy Starke of DVD company Mondo Macabro gave Fango the exclusive news that ZIBAHKHANA/HELL’S GROUND, the Pakistani zombie film he edited and that we first told you about here, will have its U.S. premiere at this year’s Philadelphia Film Festival, which runs April 5-18 (exact screening date to be announced). Prior to that, the movie has its world premiere at Copenhagen, Denmark’s Natfilm Festival, taking place March 23-April 1. Starke further alerts us that there’s now a MySpace page open for HELL’S GROUND, where you can find more info and juicy photos, to go with the official website here.

Directed by Omar Ali Khan and co-produced by Mondo’s Pete Tombs, the film follows a group of five teenagers who get lost while traveling to a concert and encounter not only hungry flesheaters but a crazed backwoods family. Done completely outside the usual Pakistani film auspices and without government backing, HELL’S GROUND is the country’s first truly modern horror feature. Look for more coverage in the near future.

In addition, Westlake is giving commercial release to John Huckert’s gay-themed serial-killer shocker HARD next Tuesday, February 20; the disc will include the uncut feature, director/producer/actor commentaries, deleted scenes and audition footage found on the previous independently distributed DVD. And in August, the company has another offbeat undead opus on tap, the intriguingly titled MOTOCROSS ZOMBIES FROM HELL.

Kojima's Version of a Zombie Apocalypse

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From MMORPG Blog:
GamesRadar alerts folks that in a recent interview with Edge magazine, the legendary Hideo Kojima, head of super-studio Kojima Productions, revealed his unlikely and unhinged vision for a zombie-themed game. According to Kojima, he's "less interested in the idea of the living dead than the fact you can turn people just by biting them." So much is his focus on "turning" people, that he even considers implementing his take on zombie-apocalypse in a massively-multiplayer online environment.

He explains:

Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles.

...They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch! ...The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well.

Not getting to control your character if you get turned? Having to hunt your former "self" and kill it (if it got zombified it's an "it" now), just to progress the game? Get bombarded by cinematics of mindless zombies? All too silly? Well, despite Kojima's own reservations about his over-the-top and unlikely Zombie-MMO, he says that he won't rule the idea out. GamesRadar reports that should he feel that the moment is opportune, he will "take some time to prepare. Very seriously."

Well, the cinematic aspect of the whole thing is trademark Kojima.

Another Zombie Squad Article

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From the UTNE Reader:

Nuclear war, avian flu, global warming, George Bush -- there are many reasons to worry that the end of the world is near, but generally, widespread zombie attacks are not one of them. Preparing for a zombie attack on the other hand, might be the one thing that saves your life should an actual catastrophe occur. That's where St. Louis's Zombie Squad steps in.

As reported by Ben Westhoff in the Riverfront Times, Zombie Squad was inspired by the movie 28 Days Later, a 2002 action flick about the undead taking over England. The group began with zombie-themed camping trips among a handful of friends and has grown into a national survivalist coalition with 175 members and hundreds of fans. Not surprisingly, many in the group are young, hip, and zombie-obsessed, but not all were looking to become survivalists. Westhoff notes that "attendees probably come to the Zombie Squad seminar expecting an in-depth discussion of the monstrous antagonists of Resident Evil and Night of the Living Dead. But they stay interested in what [squad member Christopher] Barnhart has to say long after the discussion strays from zombies."

New Grindhouse Poster Revealed

From /film:
The new movie trailer hit on Thursday, and today we bring you the New Theatrical Poster.

I love the retro ripped and torn look they’re using for all the marketting materials. Click on the poster for a high resolution look.
Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino exploitation double feature Grindhouse plays homage to B-movie thrillers of the 1970’s. Tarantino’s Death Proof is about a psycho named Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) who stalks and kills beautiful women with his fast sports car. Rodriguez’ Planet Terror is a Zombie thriller following a gun-legged woman named Cherry (Rose McGowan) and her martial arts-wielding partner (Freddy Rodriguez). The two feature films will be connected together by fake movie trailers created by Rob Zombie, Eli Roth, and Edgar Wright. Grindhouse hits theaters on April 6th 2007.

Not your typical Valentine's Day

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From the Oregon Daily Emerald:
Valentine's Day, the holiday for love, lust and... zombies. That's right, of all the days of the year, the undead of Eugene chose Valentine's Day to once again roam the earth.

Whether the zombies were suffering from supernatural heartbreak, were beckoned back from the dead by lovelorn souls, or were just plain necrophiliacs, was not really clear. But nonetheless it was a very popular night to be dead.

8:00 p.m. - More than 80 zombies (or rather, the people who were dressed as zombies) in varied states of semi-animated life congregated at Pioneer Cemetery, their eyes sunken, overwhelmed by their lust for flesh.

A few jugs of whiskey were being passed around, and many of the walking dead pulled out pocket flasks and beer bottles from their torn, blood-ridden cloths.

Apparently, all are equal among the dead. Zombies of all flavor came out that night: prom queens, soldiers, pregnant housewives, cheerleaders, surfers, goths, clowns and punks, to name a few. Everyone was splattered with at least a couple pints of what appeared to be blood, and then all joined the chorus of the zombie anthem:

"Brains..... brains... ugghhhhh..."

Zombie Dance Dance Revolution

From Torontoist:
"Thriller" is having a moment. Last October, we reported the story of Thrill Toronto’s attempt to set the first Guinness World Record for Largest Thriller Dance (see the video at right) by recreating the choreography from Micheal Jackson's video classic. Then there was the much blogged Thriller Wedding Dance on YouTube, a Bollywood-style version and reports from London and New York of fitness classes that use M.J.'s zombified moves as a 13 minute workout.

Now the ghoul kids from Thrill Toronto are back with plans to Thrill the World. The plan is to stage a simultaneous dance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with thousands of dancers in over 100 cities on October 27, 2007. "Everyone asks why 'Thriller,' " says choreographer Ines Markeljevic, the driving force behind Thrill The World. “But everybody knows it and it’s very easy to learn." And the main purpose for the event is, simply, to get more people dancing.

Zombie Idol

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From TheSpoof.com:
Gillian McDonut, a recently deceased homicide victim, spoke of her joy yesterday at winning American Idol.

"It's a dream come true for me," said McDonut, "After I was stabbed and passed away, I thought my dream of becoming a pop star was over. Now, however, I've got my whole life...I mean death in front of me."

Gillian, dubbed the comeback Queen by the press, was butchered by a crazed madman, Dr Death.

The Doctor's plan was to reanimate Gillian and then force her to give birth to a mutant army of superhuman brain-eating zombies.

"Yeah...I still enjoy eating brains but my music comes first." Gillian told us yesterday.

It was hoped that Miss McDonut's first single would be a duet with Sir Elton John but, unfortunately, this was postponed after the follically challenged, midget superstar was found partially eaten in his dressing room.

Simon Cowell paid tribute to Gillian's win by saying, "She's a lovely girl and the whole brain-eating thing is a good gimmick. The public love someone who's a bit different."

Grind House will be presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Can negative ads defeat zombies?

From The Star.com:
Once upon a time in a land called Canada, the people were worried about a grave and imminent threat. A marauding gang of flesh-eating zombies, working its way into the country by way of Minnesota, was threatening to bite millions of Canadians and recruit them into the army of the undead.

For a long time, there was a debate about whether the zombies posed a real threat. For one thing, they walked so slowly, and, for another, they were always tripping over things. The country's Liberal party believed that, sooner or later, they'd be here. The Conservatives, however, said you gotta be kidding, they'll never get here and, besides, the zombies are just part of a natural cycle.

But as more studies were done, a consensus emerged. The scientific community agreed that the zombies were coming, they'd be here any day, and we had to do something.

Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From AfterElton.com:
Brent Hartinger made a splash with Geography Club, his 2003 gay teen novel about a group of kids who start a secret high school gay-straight alliance, then give it the most boring name they can think of, the Geography Club, to keep others from joining. A sequel, The Order of the Poison Oak, followed in 2005.

Hartinger, a contributor to AfterElton.com (and the partner of this writer!), is back with another sequel to Geography Club. Called Split Screen: Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies/Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies, and it's actually two-books-in-one. Read the first “book,” Attack of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies, which is told from the point-of-view of gay boy Russel, then flip the book over and read the second “book,” Bride of the Soul-Sucking Brain Zombies, which is told from the point-of-view of Russel's bisexual best friend Min. The two books together are the story of when Russel and Min get jobs working as an extra on a zombie film being shot in town.

Girl Sparks Violent Witch-hunt

According to the State, the girl sparked a violent witch-hunt when she told a community meeting that an 80-year-old woman was keeping zombies at her house.

Four houses belonging to the old woman and her two sons were torched by angry community members. The damage is estimated to be over R300 000.

Zombie Squad Talk

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From St. Louis RFT:
"We're going to talk a little bit today about the inevitable zombie uprising, the zombie apocalypse — also known as 'zombocalypse.'" So begins William Spencer, addressing 150 science-fiction geeks at last October's Archon convention in Collinsville, Illinois.

Spencer, a 31-year-old body-piercer who is dressed this day like a Commando character, is a founder of the Zombie Squad. A St. Louis-based survivalist group that uses the walking dead as a metaphor for the breakdown of society, the Zombie Squad's primary mission is to teach disaster-preparation tactics to the public. What unites this quirky mix of tattooed hipsters, role-playing gamers and sci-fi nerds is an insatiable appetite for zombie flicks.

On this autumn afternoon, the group is hosting a disaster-education seminar worthy of the Red Cross. But before getting into the nuts and bolts of their survivalist message, they treat the crowd to some play-acted, zombie fun.

Reiko and the Zombie Shop Five

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From ActiveAnime.com:
REIKO THE ZOMBIE SHOP VOLUME FIVE is a spicy little piece of paranormal action and gory adventure from Dark Horse Manga. Sort of anti-Buffy on acid, Reiko has captured the imagination- and no doubt caused a few nightmares- for fans on both sides of the Pacific in the last few years. Rei Mikamoto’s story about this teenage necromancer has already seen her solve murders, take on serial killers and gangsters, get beheaded in the process and be brought back to life after having her head spliced to the recently deceased body of a fellow summoner. Reiko has done battle with her twin sister Riruka, who wanted to turn the world into a zombie empire under her control. Reiko has also become involved with the sister of the serial killer she defeated- and who in turn killed her. It seems in the last volume, the little sister escaped from a hospital and horribly dispatched the daughter of the doctor who had been treating her. Volume Five opens with Reiko closing in on the wayward girl with an unusual strategy in mind for bringing her to justice. Following that, though, it looks like Reiko has finally met her match in the form of the Star Collector, a summoner with the ability to steal the marks of other summoners- and the powers that come with them- right off their bodies. And by the way, Reiko’s sister Riruka has also risen from the dead and is looking for some payback. Just a little FYI…

Jethro Thule: Zombie Killer

From MPOGD.com:

From the minds of “Massively Online Gamer” comes Jethro Thule: Zombie Killer, the first “Choose your own adventure” podcast. Each week the audience gets to decide the next step of the story by casting their votes at http://www.mogarmy.net.

The scene begins at “The Last Chance Gas Station,” Jethro’s home and dilapidated fuel shop. After multiple nuclear explosions occur far off in the distance, Jethro and his trusty, stuffed, and dead dog Toadkiller witness a bizarre phenomenon… the dead are rising.

Originally part of the podcast “Massively Online Gamer,” Jethro Thule: Zombie Killer was one of the most popular segments on the show. So popular that producer, Todd Zelin, decided to bring it to the next level. “We all agreed that Jethro needed an upgrade,” says Zelin, “Initially Ryan Verniere, co-host of MOG, would read that week’s installment during the taping of the weekly show. On part 5 of Jethro, we started to pre-record and sound-designing the segment. After an awesome response from the fan-base we commissioned artist and MOG fan, Jake Harold, to draw story-boards and comic book like panels to illustrate the story each week.”

The guys also decided to add to the growing list of MOG shows by releasing Jethro Thule: Zombie Killer as a separate podcast. Already regularly releasing Massively Online Gamer, The MMO Minute and the new review show, Cognition, this release expands the reach of the MOG brand beyond the gaming news and commentary to other forms of entertainment.

You can subscribe to the Jethro Thule: Zombie Killer on iTunes and also access the latest episode at http://www.mogarmy.net and click on the “Watch Now!” button.

The Amazing Screw-on Head

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From St. Louis RFT:
At 22 minutes, it's hard to rationalize a good reason to purchase this animated goof-out from Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy -- well, except that it's genius. A bit of Pythonesque lunacy, based on a Mignola comic and retaining his crudely beautiful artwork, it stars Paul Giamatti (no, seriously) as the voice of the title character, a sort of spy-catching Iron Pipsqueak in the employ of Abraham Lincoln. The Prez calls upon Screw-On Head to save America ("by which I mean, the world") from the evil Emperor Zombie (David Hyde Pierce), Screw-On Head's former manservant, who stole from him the Love of His Life, Patience (Molly Shannon), now a member of the living dead. In other words, it's deadpan nonsense -- a love triangle starring a zombie, robot, and vampire, featuring an Honest Abe who says things like "We're dealing with undead perversions of the only woman you ever loved." Like I said, genius.

Zombie CSI

From BC Books (in an interview with Jonathan Mayberry):
...now that it’s done, I’m launching into a pop-culture nonfiction book called ZOMBIE CSI: The Forensic Science of the Living Dead, which is built around interviews with real world experts on forensics and law enforcement, asking them how they would respond to a zombie uprising. It’s true weird science, because some of these guys — especially the neurologists I’ve been talking with — have worked out some credible theories for how the living dead might actually rise. Creepy, but fun. I’m even going to spend a whole day with a SWAT team.

Diary of the Dead Preview at Chicago Fango Con

From Fango:
A special behind-the-scenes sneak preview of George A. Romero’s DIARY OF THE DEAD will take place at the next Midwest edition of FANGORIA’s Weekend of Horrors convention, to be held February 23-25 (three monstrous days!) at the Wyndham Chicago O’Hare Hotel (6810 North Mannheim Road, Rosemont, IL). Documentarian/director/editor Michael Felsher (pictured in ghoul getup for his LAND OF THE DEAD zombie cameo) will unveil clips from the set of Romero’s latest DEAD opus and offer a “fly on the wall” perspective on the new zombie production, which he chronicled. Felsher’s DVD special-feature credits through his Red Shirt Pictures company include FLESH WOUNDS: SEVEN STORIES OF THE SAW (for last year’s TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Ultimate Edition); IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY: THE MAKING OF A SEQUEL (for TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2); AFTER “EFFECTS”; and MY DEMON NIGHTS (with NIGHT OF THE DEMONS’ Linnea Quigley).

Fessenden's I Sell the Dead

From Fango:
Filmmaker Larry (WENDIGO) Fessenden, who has also taken numerous acting turns in everything from Brad Anderson’s SESSION 9 to Jim Jarmusch’s BROKEN FLOWERS, tipped us off that he’ll be appearing alongside genre fave Ron (HELLBOY) Perlman and Dominic (LOST) Monaghan in writer/director Glenn McQuaid’s horror feature I SELL THE DEAD. Set up at Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix under the ScareFlix banner (also responsible for THE ROOST, AUTOMATONS and the upcoming TRIGGER MAN), I SELL THE DEAD will be an extension of director McQuaid’s period short film THE RESURRECTION APPRENTICE (see item here), and revolves around a pair of grave-robbers (played by Fessenden, reprising his role from the short as pictured here, and Monaghan) who find that some of the corpses they unearth aren’t as dead as they may like.

Zombie Farm Pics

From Fango:
Indie writer/director B. Luciano Barsuglia, whose shocker DEMENTIA: AN EXPERIMENT IN TERROR hit DVD last year through his BLB Media, gave Fango the scoop and a bunch of pics (see more below) from his latest feature ZOMBIE FARM. Produced by Barsuglia and Vince Lara, the hi-def movie is about four college students who find themselves in the midst of an undead attack in the small town of Muerto Verde. The local farmers are being transformed into ghouls thanks to the water supply being poisoned by the Taliban (!), and only the friends and a pair of trigger-happy FBI agents can stop the zombie plague. The cast includes Bobby Field, Christine Cowden, Kimberly Fisher, Jed Rowen, Joe (DEATH ROW) Estevez, John Philbin from CHILDREN OF THE CORN and THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, Javier Morga, DEAD THINGS and NIGHTWALKERS director D.T. Carney, Danielle De Luca, Chris Leone “and literally hundreds of extras in the roles of zombies,” Barsuglia tells Fango.

From Fango:
Another good reason to sign up for VOOM’s high-definition Monsters HD channel has just been announced: the 24-hour creature showcase will be airing Fred Dekker’s NIGHT OF THE CREEPS in hi-def on Sunday, February 4 at 5:15 p.m., followed by encore showings that night at 1:15 a.m. and on Monday, Feb. 5 at 3:45 p.m. A loving, scary/funny homage to every horror subgenre known to man, Dekker’s 1986 writing/directing debut and Fango fave stars Jason Lively and Jill Whitlow as college students battling possessive extraterrestrial slugs, with the help of a cynical detective memorably enacted by Tom Atkins.

From Drowned in Sound:
What's the deal with you providing the score for the Zombie Undead film?
The director, Reese, recognised our B-movie influences and asked us to provide the score for his new film, Zombie Undead, currently in production. It’s something we’re very excited about, in no small part due to the promise of cameo roles as zombies. We’ll be providing some original band tracks alongside some more atmospheric, electronic-based material.
