The Ocean

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The Ocean (MySpace):
THE OCEAN is a tale of creeping terror that centers on Cathy (Margot Kidder), a psychic who travels to Puerto Rico to be with her estranged family after the drowning deaths of her daughter's husband and son. Upon arriving, Cathy begins receiving frightening premonitions as the ocean continues to claim more victims. Judith O' Dea (Night of the Living Dead) will play a scuba diver who, along with Cathy, ultimately discovers that a watery apocalypse may soon be at hand.

Dante Tomaselli on THE OCEAN...

"It's about the end of the world. A mysterious, deadly Ebola-like virus is spreading along the coast. The Ocean is a zombie splatter movie with a story of a family in deep psychic pain at the core. I'd say it's definitely my most ambitious film. I hope I don't drown while shooting it."

War of the Dead

Zombies from Finland! Yay!

From Twitch:
The recent wave of genre film coming out of the Nordic countries continues with War of the Dead, a Finnish / US co-production directed by Marko Makilaakso with a dominantly English speaking cast.

In the frozen arctic forests, Captain Martin Stone is leading a finely-trained, elite platoon of American and Finnish soldiers as they attack an enemy bunker. Underestimating their enemy’s strength, they are quickly beaten back into the forest. As they try to regroup, they are suddenly attacked by the same soldiers they had just killed a few minutes earlier. Forced to flee deeper into Russian territory, they discover one of war’s most terrifying secrets and realize they have woken up a far more deadlier enemy.

Apparently this only started shooting in November but they've already got an early teaser cut together and it's looking impressive. Makilaakso clearly knows what he's doing behind the camera ...

Zombie Circus

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Official Website:

Brian Keeping is a young gay mechanic who lives with his grandma and yearns to be an entertainer. Randy is flaming hairdresser. Steffi is, well your typical fag hag. This group of best friends lives in the most un-PC homophobic town in mid-west America. The traveling circus comes to town and our hero, Brian thinks it’s his chance to escape but everything goes horribly wrong.

Unbeknownst to him and his friends, the town has a dark history and committed a heinous crime at the hands of the old hypocritical pastor when they put a circus of the past to the torch and condemned them to a horrible fiery death. What’s worst, is that circus was in possession of a mysterious tonic that was supposed to promote longevity when it met its end. Now the new circus just happens to stir up that past, in more ways than one, and instead of a flight to freedom our hero and his friends end up fighting for their lives.

Distribution Rights Up for Zonbi Jieitai (Zombie Self-Defense Force)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Twitch:
Distribution rights for Naoyuki Tomomatsu's Zombie Self-Defense Force (Zonbi jieitai) - a.k.a. "Zombie Jieitai" - are being offered for sale by Gold View Y.K. (Y.K. Gôrudo Byû).

Zombie Self-Defense Force had what appears to have been its world première at Dead by Dawn 2006 in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 23rd. It had its North American première at the 2006 Fantasia Festival in Montréal, Canada on July 24th. GP Museum Soft K.K. (K.K. GP Myûjiamu Sofuto) released it on sale DVD (DMSM-6652; NTSC, region 2, no subtitles) in Japan on April 25th.

The screenplay for Zombie Self-Defense Force was written by Tomomatsu and Chisato Ôgawara. The movie's cast includes Miyû Watase, Hisakatsu Ôya, Jun Yamasaki, Shun Saeki, Mihiro, Kenji Arai, Yûya Takayama, Masayuki Hase, Kiyo Yoshizawa, Eriko Nagamine, and Yû Machimura.

Here's a description of Zombie Self-Defense Force from the Fantasia Festival website: "It's an ordinary day in the Japanese countryside - a day of sightseeing for tourists, photo shoots for a pop-star model and her crew, routing training for a squad of JSDF soldiers, treachery for an adulterous couple and sudden murder for gangsters. Everything changes, though, when a UFO crashes and releases some form of strange radiation. Confusion turns to sheer terror and the grim, blood-soaked will to survive when the dead rise and attack the living in a mindless cannibalistic frenzy! Soon, the soldiers and a handful of civilians are holed up in a secluded hotel, surrounded by the zombie hordes. There are other dark secrets at work, though. One soldier, Yuri, has been having sudden, painful flashbacks to a mysterious operating room, and there's that spooky legend about the ghostly, ultra-patriotic Japanese soldier from WWII lurking in a local cave... ¶ ZOMBIE SELF-DEFENSE FORCE opens with a sarcastic, faux-fascist voiceover dismissing heinous wartime history, demanding the reinstatement of a true Japanese military and vilifying the USA. Or American militarism, at least - the Yanks, after all, gave the worl[d] hamburgers, rock 'n' roll and, of course, the beloved filmography of George A. Romero! Consider this a companion piece to TOKYO ZOMBIE, also screening at Fantasia this year. But where TOKYO ZOMBIE is a wry farce toying cleverly with zombie-movie traditions, ZOMBIE SELF-DEFENSE FORCE is a gleeful, lo-fi leap into lurid lore of the living dead, now unquestionably a global pop-culture phenomenon. And don't tell us that flying, cackling undead fetus isn't just the most adorable little thing you ever saw!"

For more information on Zombie Self-Defense Force, see Twitch's fourth, third, second, and first articles on it.

The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened.

Night of the Comet on DVD

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fango:
Despite the plethora of vintage horror flicks hitting DVD over the last few years, there are still plenty of cultish genre titles lying in wait for their disc release—Fred Dekker’s MONSTER SQUAD and NIGHT OF THE CREEPS being two eagerly sought titles. Mention those ’80s jewels and you can’t help but bring up the similarly satiric NIGHT OF THE COMET, Thom Eberhardt’s 1984 Valley girls-vs.-mutants sci-fi/horror item starring Catherine Mary Stewart, an actress who had adolescent boys drooling twice that year when she also appeared in THE LAST STARFIGHTER. (She’s making a genre comeback of sorts in 2007, appearing in both Mary Lambert’s THE ATTIC and the adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s THE GIRL NEXT DOOR.) MGM Home Entertainment is giving COMET a proper DVD debut, Fango has learned, with a March 6 street date. No specs just yet, but when they’re announced we’ll shoot ’em your way!

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things and Deathdream Remakes

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Bloody-Disgusting:
We had originally reported this morning that Writer/Director Bob Clark told us that ELI ROTH (Cabin Fever, Hostel) is still helming the remake of the Canadian horror film DEATHDREAM -- but apparently he is wrong (go figure that one out). We've been informed by sources close to the remake that STEPHEN SUSCO (The Grudge) wrote the remake under the title ZERO DARK THIRTY and JOHN STALBERG JR. is attached to direct. Right now they are searching for a new home for the project. Watch this spot for updates as they come in.

The original follows a young Soldier who is killed in the line of duty in Vietnam. That same night, the soldier returns home, brought back by his Mother's wishes that he "Don't Die"! Upon his Return, Andy sits in his room, refusing to see his friends or family, venturing out only at night. The Vampiric horror is secondary to the terror that comes from the disintegration of a typical American family.

As for other Bob Clark news, we recenlty interviewed the director who tells us tons of goodies about the Children remake:

"Basically, what happens is that in the 20's, there were four castles on this island and there is this character, Mason ghoul, who's had a massive party and comes down the stairs and with an automatic rifle that he had invented and kills 14 people. That ruins the whole island. These people are buried. On the next day, revenge is taken on him. Those are the older ghouls. They look like mummies, hardly any flesh, just eyes. Then they turn into a burial island and the middle ghouls are going to be pretty grimy. Then they change into an island for pedophiles and sex criminals and they've only lasted 4 years so they're not very rotten.

Grindhouse One-Sheet & Figures

From Bloody-Disgusting:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

"Grind House" – noun – A downtown movie theater - in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the '30s and '40s - known for "grinding out" non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies. From groundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes the ultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall both filmmakers' favorite exploitation films. "Grind House" will be presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Tarantino's film, Death Proof, is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Rodriguez's film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in Planet Terror. Welcome to the grind house - it'll tear you in two.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

"NECA is proud to present Official Grindhouse Action Figures! Our first series of figures includes machine gun-legged Cherry, Dakota, and Rapist No. 1! With a character like "Rapist No. 1," you know this movie is going to be just as sick we're hoping! These figures don't hit shelves until early spring, but here's a first glimpse at our awesome Grindhouse Action Figures!"

Yuzna Talks House of Reanimator, etc.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fango:
Brian Yuzna believes there’s enough life in the RE-ANIMATOR franchise for three more pictures. The producer of the initial film and director of BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR and BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR talked about his latest endeavors and nearly year-old production company, Halcyon Pictures, to Gli Occhi su Cinema.

Ever the showman, Yuzna lets fly on number of projects, including the two RE-ANIMATOR sequels waiting in the wings (indicating an all-new trilogy) after the long-talked-about HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR, which has “[Herbert] West being called to the White House to re-animate the deceased vice president. Of course, by the time the dust settles, even the president has been reanimated and West is the power behind the throne,” Yuzna tells the site. “The second would be RE-ANIMATOR UNBOUND! West would have his own fiefdom amidst a war zone. There his experiments take him directly in conflict with religion and face to face with the Old Ones of Lovecraftian lore. The final episode would be RE-ANIMATOR BEGINS.” That final chapter would find West reconnecting with his past—and the family of his old mentor, Professor Gruber—after finding his mind erased.

Black Sheep Trailer

It's been over a year since we first mentioned Black Sheep...it's about time there was more news.

From Film Threat:
After a big buzz following it's debut at the Toronto Film Festival, zombie-sheep horror comedy flick "Black Sheep" has a trailer. And it...looks...awesome! Sure, it's going to be stupid, we're talking about zombie sheep here. But WETA did the effects and the trailer looks like a cross between "Shaun of the Dead" and "Feast." So far the film is only going to show in Australia but if we put our geek fingers to typing, maybe we can get this flick playing over here as well. It's baaaaad news if we can't.

Grave Danger: A Zombie Noir Tale

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From PopMatters:
Adherents to the DIY ethic of punk rock must be reeling at the Hot Topicization of their beloved genre. Anarchy, in the UK and in the rest of the world, is now embroidered on hoodies and patches and sold to suburban teens who can still remember fawning over Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. Mohawks, after a brief dalliance with mainstream acceptance during Mr. T’s heyday, have become firmly entrenched in fashion, even spawning the dreaded faux hawk for those who like to have their cake and eat it, too.

Still, there are those who soldier on, making their mark on the world with their zines, music and other creative endeavors. The guys behind Grave Danger: A Zombie Noir Tale --writer Jim Bryant and artist Dave Fox—are doing it themselves, through Bryant’s Tiki Room 32 Productions, a self publishing venture that delivers “edgy punk rock cinema and literature with a bite!”

If only this were true.

ZAGG Troubles Update

So...the motherboard was fried. Pretty awesome for a two and a half year old computer. *grumble*

Anyway, instead of paying out the ass for something that'll be obsolete in a few years, I decided to pay out the ass even more for something new and improved. So, I switched from PC to Mac, and it'll be a few more weeks before I can get Word to open up all my proper ZAGG files. That's a lot of technical blah, blah, blah...but all you need to know, really, is that my postings elsewhere to let people know I've updated (on MySpace, etc) won't be quite up to par until I can get some bugs worked out. I will be able to update, so check back whenever you can.

Speaking of which, I probably won't be able to update again until after Xmas--I must trek up to Canada to attend my sister's wedding and celebrate the usual Xmas festivities. I'll be ZAGG-free until I get back.

Thanks for all your patience, and keep checking back to ZAGG!

Cheers,
Kriscinda

The End of Alice?

From Bloody-Disgusting:
Is this the end for Sony's Resident Evil franchise? What happened to the plans for a four film in either Alaska or Japan? Well, something must have happened as the new synopsis was just release for the third film in the franchise, Resident Evil: Extinction, which indicates otherwise. Read on for a look at the details along with a new still! Milla Jovovich is back as Alice on September 21, 2007. Thanks to Cesar for the heads up.
The third and final installment of the $100 million "Resident Evil" hits, "Resident Evil: Extinction" is again based on the wildly popular video game series and picks up where the last film left off. Alice (Milla Jovovich), now in hiding in the Nevada desert, once again joins forces with Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps), along with new survivors Claire (Ali Larter), K-Mart (Spencer Locke) and Nurse Betty (Ashanti) to try to eliminate the deadly virus that threatens to make every human being undead... and to seek justice. Since being captured by the Umbrella Corporation, Alice has been subjected to biogenic experimentation and becomes genetically altered, with super-human strengths, senses and dexterity. These skills, and more, will be needed if anyone is to remain alive.

The new discs will be packed with extras distinct from those previously issued by MGM and Elite, respectively; the Bay is working with Don Coscarelli on not only his 1979 original but a deluxe DVD of PHANTASM III as well, also for release on the 10th. As for RE-ANIMATOR, the company has already recorded a pair of new audio commentaries: one by writer/director Stuart Gordon, and the other with producer Brian Yuzna and actors Bruce Abbott, Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton and Robert Sampson. Look for complete details on these as soon as we find ’em out!

Dead and Deader Set Visit

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fangoria:

With Patrick Dinhut’s directorial debut DEAD & DEADER (which we first reported on here) premiering December 16 on The Sci Fi Channel, the film’s producer/co-writer Mark Altman provided Fango with an exclusive clip of the horror/comedy; check it out here (and give it a minute or two to get started). He also passed on a bunch of new photos (see more below) and put us in touch with his DEAD & DEADER co-scribe Steve Kriozere, who describes the film as “a zom-edy, sort of 48 HRS. meets DAWN OF THE DEAD. It’s very different from any (previous) Sci Fi Channel movie, and it’s gory and funny and sexy and just cool.”

Chronicling an infection which threatens to transform humanity into shambling ghouls, the Mindfire Entertainment production (which utilized the prosthetic talents of Jason Collins and Elvis Jones of Autonomous FX and KNB EFX’s Greg Nicotero) employs a “great cast,” Kriozere says, led by “Dean Cain as Lieutenant Bobby Quinn, who returns from a mission in Cambodia to discover he has powers and abilities he has never dreamed of…except maybe in LOIS & CLARK." Joining the actor and female lead Susan Ward for the mayhem is a horrorcentric ensemble comprised of Guy (TALES FROM THE HOOD) Torry, John (TV’s THE OTHERS) Billingsley, Armin Shimerman (BUFFY’s Principal Snyder), Dean (THE X FILES) Haglund, Ellie (HALLOWEEN 4) Cornell and Natassia (SKINWALKERS) Malthe. While the film doesn’t yet have its own official site, visit Mindfire Entertainment on the web here for more information.

Academy Students will soon be ‘Zombies’

From the Cape Breton Post:
SYDNEY — Student actors from Sydney Academy will be ready for their closeups, thanks to some expert help from leading professionals in Atlantic Canada’s television and film industry.

Karen Byers, who does hair for programs including This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and Annemarie Cassidy Clattenburg, the makeup artist for Trailer Park Boys, were in Sydney Friday to work with the young performers so they will have the look just right for their film, Zombie Romeo.

Teacher Maynard Morrison explains that, in the comedic film, the students are staging a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Boardmore Playhouse on the Cape Breton University campus, when the leading man is seemingly killed by a falling sandbag but miraculously appears for rehearsals the next day, and zombie havoc ensues.

“Once we knew we were doing a zombie movie, I knew we wouldn’t have a clue how to do makeup,” Morrison says.

“We would be guessing and, when it came down to it, it would look fairly amateurish.”

Zombie-shark Trainer Looking at Non-military Applications

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From engadget:
Earlier this year we brought you news of an exciting DARPA-funded project whose goal was to take your common, household shark and turn it into a remote-controllable spy capable of gathering critical military intelligence such as the location of enemy mines and submarines. And sure enough, Boston University's Jelle Atema and his team learned how to crudely guide these kings of the sea using either electrical stimulation to mimic their natural neural processes or -- our favorite -- little gadgets attached to their noses that release delicious-smelling squid juice on cue. While Professor Atema was able to make a good deal of headway in his research, biologists still have a long way to go before they fully understand how sharks use odor stimuli to navigate, and DARPA funding ran out before any more progress could be made at BU: the zombie-shark project recently got sucked into the black hole that is classified military research.

Indie star’s secret past as a blood-curdling zombie

From South Manchester Reporter:
THIS is pop star Ian Parton as his thousands of his fans have never seen him before.

The ex-Chorlton guitarist is leader of the highly-regarded indie group, the Go! Team, one of the coolest bands on the music scene.

But, unknown to many, he played a minor role in an amateur zombie film with a group of friends in the bohemian suburb before finding fame with the band, which was last year nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

The short film, called Zombie Nosh, was shot on Super 8 film at a number of different locations in Chorlton ten years ago.

Images from the film have never been shown publicly - until now. In the silent comedy, Ian plays a zombie living under a railway bridge on the suburbs deserted train line.

"Zombie chickens" hatch debate over older chickens' fate

From AP Wire:
In this rich agricultural region of Northern California, ranchers have been turning chickens too old to lay eggs into compost at a rate of a half-million hens a year.

But some chickens not properly euthanized have been seen crawling out of the compost piles, earning them the name "zombie chickens" - and hatching a debate over what else might be done with them and other "spent hens."

Walking Dead Raises the Bar

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From IGN:
THE WALKING DEAD #33 is an instant sell out! The most controversial issue of Robert Kirkman's end-days epic to date has sold out at Diamond in less than 24 hours, and to respond to the overwhelming demand, Image Comics is going back to press.

In a world filled with flesh-eating zombies, humanity must become savage to survive. This issue features ex-lawyer Michonne turning the tables on her sadistic captor the Governor - who Wizard Magazine named "Villain of the Year." Fans everywhere are talking about the latest haunting installment of the fan-favorite zombie saga.

"A 24 hour sell-out is an incredible achievement," said Image's Executive Director Eric Stephenson. "Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard really pushed the envelope with this issue. It's terrifying, it's challenging, and what's so great about THE WALKING DEAD is you never know what's going to happen next. From brutal action to desperate romance to powerful commentary on the human condition, anything can happen in THE WALKING DEAD. This horrifying issue is a great example of why this series is such a hit."

The zombie tale that never ends just got a whole lot darker. THE WALKING DEAD #33 will be back in stores in early January.

So are zombie versions of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Abe Lincoln, all priced at $16.

Troubles

I just wanted to pop in while I could and say that updates are suspended as of this moment. My computer died the other day. It's at the shop right now, though the moment I get it back I have more pressing things to take care of, such as finishing final papers for class just in the nick of time. After that, I will get back to regular updates. Sorry for the inconvenience, and please do check back now and then. I wish I could tell you something more solid than this, but I'm at the mercy of the brainy, and somewhat snide computer people. :(

All proceeds go to legal expenses in our lawsuit against the Minneapolis Police!!! Read
our Press Release here:

The Zombie 7 have all joined in a lawsuit against the City of Minneapolis, numerous police officers, and the Hennepin County Jail. On July 22, 2006, the Zombies were
holding a zombie dance party in downtown Minneapolis, where they engaged in public performing art for the purpose of making a political statement. The Minneapolis police responded by harassing and arresting them for no reaon. The police malicously accused them of possessing simulated weapons of mass destruction for using homemade sound equipment for their music, and then held them in jail for two days. The city and county attorneys subsequently determined there was no basis for any criminal charges. The Hennepin County jail subsequently discrminated against one of
the zombies because of his disability.

The Zombie 7 are seeking to hold the City accountable for violations of their rights to free speech and other constitutional rights, and ensure that no similar political harassment occurs in the future.

If anybody wants to read a copy of the complaint, email me and I'll send it to you!

Mass Acre Hill

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From Fangoria:
Fango heard from Canadian indie moviemaker Jamie Francis, who along with his brother Dan is in the throes of postproduction on a low-budget zombie flick called MASS ACRE HILL (see more photos below). The movie stars Dan Francis (pictured at bottom) and Spencer Dickson as "two downed pilots who have just crashed a secret government aircraft while on a test mission," Jamie tells Fango. "Unfortunately, their mission creates a disturbance and opens up the past of the area, known as Mass Acre Hill. Our heroes encounter ancient undead natives, drug smugglers and a cult of devil worshippers."

The Francis Brothers wrote, directed and produced MASS ACRE HILL, which according to Jamie "was shot on a very minimal budget of less then $1,000 on high-definition video. Shooting began in July, and the movie will be released on DVD in January or February 2007. It was co-produced by Jeffrey Scott Richards and Amanda Lesage and associate-produced by Paul Kimball, Damien Donnelly, Larry Gevirtz, Molly Celaschi and James Magnum Cook." A MySpace page for the project is up here, and includes a teaser trailer. "We did that before production to gain buzz and gain a little bit of backing," Jamie says. "It was shot in a day and edited together rather quickly, but we've been getting great feedback on it since we posted it." Keep an eye on that page, which also includes a few more pics and artwork, for updates on MASS ACRE HILL.

Synopsis for Plague of the Dead by Z.A. Recht
The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate…

Death.

But it doesn't end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth.

When a massive military operation fails to contain the plague of the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic. In one fell swoop, the necessities of life become much more basic. Gone are petty everyday concerns. Gone are the amenities of civilized life.

Yet a single law of nature remains: Live, or die. Kill, or be killed.

On one side of the world, a battle-hardened General surveys the remnants of his command: a young medic, a veteran photographer, a brash Private, and dozens of refugees, all are his responsibility—all thousands of miles from home. Back in the United States, an Army Colonel discovers the darker side of Morningstar virus and begins to collaborate with a well-known journalist to leak the information to the public...
