All you have to do is dress and make yourself up in your best undead garb, film or tape yourself lurching toward the camera and send the footage to the Mindsplinters team, and they'll �"ake your zombie self, friends and family and will digitally do our magic to make you a part of this historical film."There are rules and guidelines, of course, and you can read all about 'em by clicking here. Canadian filmmaker Brian Clement gave Fango the scoop that he’s gearing up to shoot the third in his MEAT MARKET series of zombie movies, and sent along the pics at left and below from some test footage he’s already shot. He describes this entry to us as “very much darker and creepier. I want to take everything I’ve learned about lighting and production design on the last two movies I’ve done, and apply it to a frightening and bloody zombie story.” That previous duo are EXHUMED and THE DEAD INSIDE, the latter of which we most recently updated you on here.

I thought Clement said he wasn't going to make any more of these things.

Box office receipts are down for the second straight year, with profit margins that will soon be eclipsed by the gumball machine and collectible lunch box industries. Costco is selling television sets that are bigger than some art house movie screens. And the winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2006 was a film that everyone hated.

The solution couldn't be clearer: Make more movies about zombies.

While the rest of Hollywood sinks into the La Brea tar pits, zombie movies have been enjoying a box office feast matched only by porn and bad superhero films. And even more improbably, these odes to the walking dead have also been extremely good -- somehow satisfying both the horror enthusiast and the Fellini-loving, daylight-hating mainstream movie critic.

Veteran FX creator Tony (THE BLOB) Gardner has joined the lineup of the next FANGORIA�s Weekend of Horrors convention, presented by Anchor Bay Entertainment, to be held June 2-4, 2006 at LA's Burbank Airport Hilton (2500 Hollywood Way). Gardner created the makeup FX for such fright favorites as RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, ARMY OF DARKNESS, DARKMAN, the ADDAMS FAMILY films and most recently SEED OF CHUCKY (pictured), where he also played an FX artist who falls prey to the killer doll. Gardner has several directorial projects in the works.

He is, if I'm not mistaken, personally responsible for this little lady.

Over at the official website of FX veteran Robert Kurtzman's new directorial effort THE RAGE, a five-minute behind-the-scenes clip has just been posted. (Hint: You may need to click just below the graphic to play it.) It's the first of many documentary segments that will be splattering onto the site every several weeks throughout the course of completion of the film. A production of Kurtzman's Precinct 13 Entertainment company, THE RAGE centers on a mad scientist (WISHMASTER's Andrew Divoff) whose experiments lead to mutated humans and rapacious vulture monsters terrorizing helpless victims. The cast is filling up quick and with each addition the more excited I get (even though AICN had a pretty negative review of Tarantino's script). Today Freddie Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) has joined John Jarrett, Danny Trejo, Alicia Rachel Marek, Tom Savini, Josh Brolin, Dean Fernando, Marley Shelton, Michael Biehn, Mickey Rourke and Zoe Bell in WeinsteinCo.'s upcoming Grind House, according to CHUD. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez each will direct a 75-minute horror tale including fake movie trailers in between both movies. Rodriguez's part, "Project Terror," will be a zombie pic, while Tarantino's section, "Death Proof," will a slasher seg. Rodriguez joins the cast of 'Project Terror', which is one of the films hitting theaters December 1st.

Most of you are probably scratching your heads, trying to figure out who this Del Tenney guy is. Well, don't worry- he's only directed 4 movies. They were hugely popular in the 60s, achieving somewhat of a cult following. The two collected on this dvd are The Horror of Party Beach and The Curse of the Living Corpse. They were filmed one after another and screened together on an unlikely double bill- ending their run at the famous Paramount theater in NYC. They're not exactly the best films ever, but if you're in the mood for b-movie goodness you've come to the right place.

The CHAC event is what some in the media have dubbed the zombie rave. Called "Better Off Undead," it ran until 4 a.m. Saturday. Some news media have made it sound as though there was a zombie cult in the rave community. Ravers say that the zombie theme was no different from a toga theme the week before—an attempt by promoters to appeal to audiences with an interesting theme in a competitive dance-event market.

I was sort of wondering what this guy's problem was and hoping his craziness wasn't related in any way to zombie fandom. According to this article, it really doesn't look like it. Good. Read the whole thing here.

When the American Chicken Bunker, a military-themed fried-chicken chain, builds a restaurant on the site of an ancient Indian burial ground, local protestors aren't the only ones crying fowl! The previous tenants, fueled by a supernatural force, take "possession" of the food and those who eat it, and the survivors discover that they must band together before they themselves become the other white meat!

Australia's worst mass murderer has become an overweight "zombie" who refuses to speak, his mother and doctors say.

It has been nearly 10 years since Martin Bryant killed 35 people and seriously injured many more during a rampage at Port Arthur in Tasmania.

In a rare interview before the anniversary of the April 28, 1996 killings, Bryant's mother Carleen says her son won't speak to her.

"Martin is like a zombie," she told The Bulletin magazine.

I'm Back.

I had an interesting last handful of days and I'm now back. I appeciate your patience in retreiving your zombie related news. I was off attending an Amnesty International event on my campus, where we camped out for a few days to raise awareness and charitable donations for displaced persons/refugees. We thought it would be cold when we first started planning for it a couple of months ago, but we weren't expecting 30 degree weather. Needless to say, it made the message particularly poignant. Hehheh...in the end, we raised $255, which is much more than I expected, considering my campus is overrun with oblivious, priviledged types. Anyway...so, I'm back and all that.

The Foretelling of a Sub-Genre.

A little bit ago, I mentioned that I had become a contributer over at The Zombie Blog. Well, I was working on a little something to post there and finally got to finish and put it up this weekend. Here's a snippet:

The Herbert West – Reanimator stories were originally published in 1922, in Homebrew magazine, under the title of “Grewsome Tales.” Seabrook’s The Magic Island was still seven years away from introducing the Haitian zombie to Hollywood in 1929, and White Zombie was still ten years away from introducing this same zombie type to filmic audiences. This is extremely interesting in the sense that, I believe, after reading Lovecraft’s undead contribution, these six stories indeed encapsulate the entire history of the zombie film sub-genre—from their humble beginnings right up to the very present. They even usurp Mr. Romero of the much-claimed title of the man who introduced cannibalism to the zombie mythos.

We last reported here on BLACK SHEEP, a bloody, wild and woolly tale of nature run amok that has been creating bales of interest ever since it was announced toward the end of 2005. The ad line says it all "There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand, and they're pissed off" though a press release adds, "On a vast sheep station, a reckless genetic engineering experiment goes horribly wrong, turning sheep into bloodthirsty killers." Even before BLACK SHEEP started shooting in Wellington, New Zealand March 6, Mel Gibson's Icon Film Distribution had snapped up the theatrical rights for Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Financed by the triumvirate of the New Zealand Film Commission, NZ On Air and the Korean-based Daesung Group, BLACK SHEEP is the feature debut of writer/director and Fangoria enthusiast Jonathan King.

Fango corralled SHEEP's busy producer Philippa Campbell long enough for her to obligingly supply a few insights into the project. "BLACK SHEEP is a combo of comedy and horror, real scares with a twist of comedy. The film is good-hearted, but it also plays with real contemporary anxieties. [It has] a distinctive voice that comes at our New Zealand tradition of "cinema of unease" in a new way."

We're talking of course about zombies. If you haven't been paying attention — and if you haven't been paying attention, heaven help you — zombies are back. In films, books and video games, the undead are once again on the march, elbowing past werewolves, vampires, swamp things and mummies to become the post-millennial ghoul of the moment. And while you may yet be unaware of the zombielike proliferation of zombie stuff, horror fans speak of the zombie craze as a fact of life, the way the rest of us talk about $3 gasoline.

I'm sure most of you have heard about this by now. From the Examiner:

SEATTLE - The partygoers didn't know Aaron Kyle Huff, and don't know who invited him to their after-party. In the culture of raves, all-night dance parties where they say young people can feel welcomed regardless of looks or background, such questions normally aren't important.

That trust was shattered Saturday morning, when Huff opened fire in a house full of ravers dressed like zombies in dark clothing and pale makeup, killing six of them and injuring two.

The 28-year-old man from Montana, who fired a 12-gauge pistol-grip shotgun and wore bandoliers of shotgun shells, killed himself when confronted by a police officer outside the home.

Now ravers are in shock after being struck by the apparently random act of violence.

"We're probably the only community in society that would have welcomed somebody so easily," said Travis Webb, an area rave promoter who attended a "zombie rave" that preceded the party where Huff opened fire.

Raves - parties that attract young people to dance to thumping, bass-laden electronic music - often are themed events where people dress up in Halloween-like outfits and paint their faces. Friday night's rave, dubbed "Better Off Undead," drew about 500 people, according to organizers.

I was sort of wondering what angle of blame the media would take (because they always do) and as it turns out, it seems as though they're leaving the zombie fan-base alone for now and going for the rave/drug thing. As if anything other than some random maniac is to blame...the more that comes out about this, the more I'll post about it.

Touchstone has announced Night Stalker: The Complete Series which stars Stewart Townsend and Gabrielle Union, according DVD Active. This new series (based on the classic 70's show) will be available to own from the 30th May, and priced at around $29.99. Each of the shows episodes will be presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. Extras will include a “Making of The Night Stalker” featurette with Frank Spotnitz, deleted scenes, audio commentaries and a script scanner. I'm afraid Touchstone has yet to reveal the official package artwork, but we'll bring you that very shortly.

I'm afraid I haven't time for a proper post this morning. This is just a quickie to let you know what's what. I will beaway from my computer participating in some humantitarian event on my campus, and so, will not be back posting news until Monday. My apologies. Plane Dead revolves around an international flight from LA to Paris on which a renegade scientist, on the run from the CIA, has smuggled a secret coffin containing a body infected with a genetically engineered virus. When the plane encounters two large storms, the extreme turbulence causes the flesheating body to escape from the plane’s hold. A life-and-death battle then ensues as the virus turns the unsuspecting passengers into the undead. Adding fuel to the fire, governments refuse the plane landing as well as air space, given the pathogen it’s carrying.

Insomniac Games, best known for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, revealed at last year's E3 that they are stepping away from family-friendly fare with the science-fiction shooter I-8. A trailer shown during Sony's pre-E3 press conference depicted WWII-era soldiers facing a threat greater than other humans--zombies and gigantic alien arachnids.

During Sony's keynote address at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, Insomniac today announced that it has given the shooter a new name more befitting its dire subject matter. The highway-like moniker of I-8 has been ditched in favor of the more appropriate Resistance: Fall of Man.

In some strange mixture of the 1950s fused with present day, the dark punk band Zombie A Go Go rip up their shows with horror inspired lyrics and wild theatrics. Its a well known fact that the majority of their fans dress up in full zombie fashion for their shows, but what they didn't know is that they would encounter the real thing at the Halloween show. Blood, Gore, Rock music, Brains, S&M, and Go-Go Dancing. ZOMBIE A GO GO!

How awesome is that last one? Very. I wish I was in Chicago...I'd totally audition for a ripe zombie bit. *pout*

Coming in 2007 is New Blood’s entry in the zombie genre, DEAD BY DAWN, currently in the development/financing stage. This one is set in an isolated town where a meteor crash brings a plague to Earth that turns the dead into those ever-popular bloodthirsty ghouls.

After a meteor smashes into the earths crust an unexplained plague has decimated an isolated towns population and yet...the dead are not dying. They've become unstoppable hungry zombies, stalking endlessly for the taste of living flesh and blood. A group of people are selected by the government to be the test subjects for their new found biological weapon. They are infected then placed in the quarantined town, where they must learn to only protect themselves from the ever increasing zombie population.

New Blood Entertainment is looking for partners to invest in this $2.5 million dollar feature film project. Dead by Dawn has a great story and will be loaded full of amazing special. Several known actors have been contacted and are interested in the project.

A red flag was raised when Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures announced they'd be remaking his classic horror pic The Evil Dead sometime in the near future -- without Bruce Campbell as Ash. We here at B-D broke the news on what Raimi had to say way back last February, today Campbell has his say in Penny Blood Magazine, "It'll be a whole new story, though. It won't be with Ash... It'll be the evil book, and it'll affect a whole new group of people in a different situation. More like a reinvention. A lot of people, they got really crabby on the Internet when they first heard that type of stuff. But, we would never do anything to insult them. The trick is to take that premise - and we think it's a scary premise - and use some cool modern day FX... so we won't have green garden hoses in the shots. We wanna make a flat out, scary-ass, un-rated horror film."

Rock N' Roll Nightmare on DVD

The good folks at Synapse Films passed on the DVD art and specs for its upcoming releases of ROCK ’N’ ROLL NIGHTMARE and SINGAPORE SLING. NIGHTMARE, whose disc release we first reported on here, streets June 27 and stars heavy metaler Jon-Mikl Thor as the lead singer of a hard rock band who confronts demons while recording a new album at an isolated farmhouse. MALDEN -- Stephen King has fond memories of Malden. He's showing his affection by unleashing a horde of zombies on Salem Street. It's kind of touching, really.

In his new horror novel ''Cell," which begins in downtown Boston, a mysterious cellphone ''pulse" turns all those who answer into subhuman maniacs. In a 60-page section called ''Malden," a small band of survivors escapes the carnage in the Hub and takes temporary refuge from the ''phone-crazies" in a house at 140 Salem St. in Malden.

The selection of Salem Street, and of Malden itself, as the setting for a horror story could have city residents scratching their heads. King's explanation?

''My mother's sister, my Aunt Molly Donahue, lived in Malden, she lived on Salem Street," King explains by phone from Florida. ''So I went back to what I knew. She was actually a milkman in Malden when I was growing up, and we spent a lot of time there when we were kids."

The House of Horrors reports today that FX guru Tom Savini will be reuniting with Robert Rodriguez once again in WeinsteinCo.'s Grind House, which is now filming in Austin, Texas. He joins John Jarrett, Danny Trejo, Alicia Rachel Marek and possibly Michael Keaton. Savini has a small role in Rodriguez' From Dusk Till Dawn as Sex Machine, the crazy biker dude. In 'Grind House', which hits theaters this December, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez each will direct a 75-minute horror tale including fake movie trailers in between both movies. Rodriguez's part, "Project Terror," will be a zombie pic, while Tarantino's section, "Death Proof," will a slasher seg.

Today New Line Cinema obtained remake rights to 2004 Japanese hospital horror film Infection, which I'd say is basically a Japanese 'Re-Animator' that really lacked a slime-filled finale. New Line has obtained remake rights to 2004 Japanese hospital horror film "Infection" and set up the project with original producer Takashige Ichise along with Vertigo Entertainment principals Roy Lee and Doug Davison.

The studio has hired Channing Gibson ("Walking Tall," "Cradle 2 The Grave") to script.

U.S. version will be set in an isolated hospital where the staff -- stymied by mistakes and coverups -- races to battle a deadly infection that turns out to be of supernatural origin.

New Line execs Jeff Katz and George Waud oversee for the studio.

"Infection" will be the latest in a long line of Vertigo films that have originated in Japan, including "The Ring," "The Ring 2," "The Grudge" and "Dark Water." Shingle's also producing "The Grudge 2," "The Departed" and "Lake House."

Filmmaker Jeff Brookshire got in touch to let us know about his entry in the zombie derby, AWAKEN THE DEAD, which is currently in postproduction with an anticipated release date of July 2006. Brookshire, who scripted and directed, describes AWAKEN as a darkly humorous horror/action/zombie movie about a government experiment with biochemical toxins that unleashes the living dead on a small California town.

Dead 3D Postponed

The regional release date for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D has been postponed once again (see our previous news item here). Director Jeff Broadstreet gave Fango the skinny on the delay: “We are not releasing the film on March 17, due to a couple of issues,” he tells us. “The CG visual effects have taken longer than expected to finish, and we also had a technical problem on the 3-D postproduction end of things that cost us a couple of weeks. So we are now looking at a fall release—probably mid-September, but I don’t have an exact date yet.” There may be a silver lining to the shift, however, as Broadstreet states: “The delay does allow us more time to explore a wider release.” Visit the film’s official site here for a 3-D gallery, trailer and more.

This is the first time that we've been looking forward to a game's soundtrack more than the game itself. It really is an astonishing achievement: a dozen or so largely excellent bands - including The Raveonettes, Cake, The Flaming Lips and Clem Snide - were asked to record cover versions of classic '50s and '60s tunes, and the result is as good as we'd hoped. Indeed, The Raveonettes were so pleased with their version of My Boyfriend's Back that it appeared on their last album.

First up is Brenda Pet, a sort of disgusting bloated fleshy Tamagotchi where you have to look after the mutated Brenda by feeding her meat. Watch her tumors move! Smell her unsavory scent! What more could you ask for?

And then there's Hunting Season, a monster blasting shoot 'em up where you must protect poor Nathan Fillon from demented Serenity fans (and mutant slugs).
